The Problem of Thoughts
No sooner do we find a
moment to sit down and come into God's Presence, than our minds fill
with every kind of thought: sacred, profane, or just plain mundane!
Father Thomas Keating discusses the problem of thoughts—or what Buddhists call "monkey mind". Father Thomas Keating's recommendation for dealing with the stream of thoughts that arise during centering prayer, or any other contemplative practice, is to allow thoughts, feelings and emotions to pass through your awareness without putting attention on those thoughts. While at the same time, not resisting the stream of thoughts that emerge. As the Buddhists say, not too tight, not too loose.
