The Complementary Views of Liberals and Conservatives

What is the fundamental difference between liberals and conservatives, or the Left and the Right? By looking at the example of gun control (in this case as it relates to the shooting massacre at Virginia Tech in 2007), Ken Wilber shows us how liberals place emphasis on societal systems (or the exterior of the collective, i.e. "we should ban guns") while conservatives look to cultural values (or the interior of the collective, i.e. "guns don't kill people, people kill people"). These differing views are beautifully contextualized and explained by simply looking at one component of the Integral model, the four quadrants. What we find by doing this is that they are both right, and they are both wrong—and only with an Integral view of politics can the truths of each be freed from the partiality of both.
