Family Entertainment

I have experienced profound feelings of goodness truth and beauty watching Pixar movies. Specifically: Finding Nemo, and the recently released Wall-E.

It surprises me when I share my feelings about these works with friends and/or family and realize that animated movies are almost always thought of as children's entertainment, and by nature contain no sophisticated content.  While this may be true for a fair amount of child-targeted media that is cranked out by the marketplace machine, there continues to be artists and even companies that rise above this stereotype and consistently deliver with integrity.

Pixar Animation Studios delivers works that remind me of the original Walt Disney films that were truly "Family Entertainment."  This was before the term connoted just "safe for children, not interesting for adults."  By that logic, I would expect a lot more from "Adult Entertainment"; I'll keep dreaming.  When I first saw Fantasia as a child, I was fascinated by the colors, powerful music, and Micky Mouse.  When I returned to the film in my teens, I was steamrolled by the groundbreaking exploration into music visualization and layered subtle themes being drawn out.  With Pixar, I particularly love how they embed strong values of integrity and passion into their magnificently illustrated tales.  In Finding Nemo, the protaganist overcomes massive odds inspired by the commitment to and love for his son.  And the love story in Wall-E is the most innocent and authentic I've ever seen portrayed; I literally had tears in my eyes for most the movie, enchanted by the depth and beauty underlying each new twist in the plot.  Even the closing credits contained a breathtaking montage.

After so many years of feeling jaded about Hollywood and embarrassed by what our nation is commonly known for, occasionally pieces of art like these emerge and justify all of our endeavours to enable the freedom to discover and deliver splendor.

I'm clearly no the only one who thinks so either.  Finding Nemo won two Oscars, generated worldwide box-office of $840 million, and became the best-selling DVD of all time.  Check-out Harvard Business Blogger Bill Taylor's post about how Pixar's success and the corporate culture that enables it.
