art that rocked my world
Posted January 20th, 2010 by Miranthe Staden... in response to John Dahlsen : Art that shifted my awarenessI came to discover the artist in me quite unexpectedly. 11 years ago i was one of those people who could not draw a stick man. My last 11 years have been spent as an art student, lecturer and writer. It is hard for me to isolate an ‘aha!’ or WOW! moment, there have been some, but mostly the images and visions have crept up on me, seeped into me, and infiltrated the whole of me, sometimes dramatically, sometimes slowly and subtly. I have found that music is more inclined to catapult me - wham-bam! - into a 'higher state', whereas my experience of art is that it takes more time to sink in, and as weaves its way through the fibres of my being, serves to influence and fine-tune my perceptions of and actions in the world. So I’m going to give a kind of (turns out to a very rambling) off the top of my head overview, of all the art that I consider to have expanded my consciousness. The names and words in bold thus serve as points on my map of growth and expanding awareness, and are potential links to follow for anyone whose interest is piqued by the following:
Mori's 2003 installation at Deitch Projects was Oneness, a project held in conjunction with the Public Art Fund’s installation of her Wave UFO project. Oneness is an allegory of connectedness, a representation of the disappearance of boundaries between the self and others. It is a symbol of the acceptance of otherness and a model for overcoming national and cultural borders. It also is a representation of the Buddhist concept of oneness, of the world existing as one interconnected organism.
Mariko Mori’s remarkable sculpture, Wave UFO was included in the 2005 Venice Biennale, after being exhibited in New York and Genoa. It was recently included in her solo exhibition at The Groniger Museum, and at the Aros Aarhus Kunstmuseum, Denmark, as part of Oneness." http://www.deitchprojects.com/artists/sub.php?artistId=15

Posted January 20th, 2010 by Miranthe Staden... in response to John Dahlsen : Art that shifted my awarenessHi Alison, my apologies for foisting the last posted comment on you, it was meant to be my own response to the inquiry, but due to my bumbling inadequecies at navigating this site, you were at the receiving end of it. I did however want to say that i really enjoyed your response, in all its sincerity and simplicity. This is a topic very close my heart as an art historian/critic/student and integral practitioner and its wonderful to hear first hand accounts of the influence on people's lives.I hope you continue to benefit from your experiences and share them with us...
Warmest regards
Miranthe
p.s. and btw, if you could tell me how one goes about inserting an image like the lovely one you included, i'd be much grateful

an artist share of how my art has shifted along with my consciousness
Posted February 25th, 2012 by jane larsen
1m not sure if this is the right venue to share art, but here goes.
Over the past year I have been working with the integral community and my process art has focused on supporting me to live with a hightened uncertainty and humility that comes with growth...key to my art was an awareness of the cellular change that can happen when i simply allow a higher degree of impermanence to exist in my awareness .
These tempera paintings are glimpses of my attempt to produce moments of my attempt to embrace impermanence and to share the beauty of how when embodied impermanence allows us to live in a state of recognition of the beauty of grace.

John Dahlsen : Art that shifted my awareness
Posted August 26th, 2009 by Alison LairdA few years ago, I was wandering around the PowerHouse Museum in Sydney with my 3 year old son. We were exploring the exhibits and interactive stuff... the sort of thing that keeps a 3 year old amused, when I turned the corner and saw this artwork that stopped me in my tracks. It was very colourful, and looked a bit like coloured totem poles. I found myself drawn ever nearer to these works, wondering what I was looking at. As I drew closer I realised I was looking at plastic bottles, of many colours, sorted into lighter shades going into darker shades. I was most intrigued by the medium. Then I read the description of the artwork. John Dahlsen had found all these plastic bottles on beaches in Victoria, Australia. He hadn't done anything with them, but had swept the beach clean of litter he had found, colour sorted them and made them into totems.
I then experienced a profound shift in my consciousness. I found myself extremely interested and excited by this work. Not only were the pieces beautiful and intriguing but there was a real message there also, for humanity to wake up to its pollution, wastage and the disrespectful way we have treated the planet. The works really touched me and I was drawn to explore more of his work. He is quite an amazing man. I was privileged to get to meet him last year and I created a video of the interview I did with him.
I am also an artist and feel that it is extremely important to create work that can help humanity to wake up and become aware of our highest potential. John's work has changed the focus of my art work. I see the need to have my work informed by the deep stillness I experience through my spiritual practice, and allow the New to shine through.
Here is a photo of John Dahlsen's work that inspired me so much in Sydney. To see more of his work please see his wonderful website: www.johndahlsen.com
Best wishes
