My main practice as well as main discipline was est, and the on going distictions one makes in listening and languge.

Some of my friends who have gone the path of the guru I notice a tendency to not own up to the experience that one is creating. ie, if one is experiencing confusion there is the want to not be confused , so they would go to the guru for some answers. In est there is nothing to get, so if confusion is what your experiencing thats it. the way you get rid of confusion is to be confused. You blow the mind by getting the experience to be itself. vs. trying to fix, or trying to figure it out, or taking a pill .

I would  expect from a guru to know who I am really am , and to call me on my act when I am not living from my power.

It could be my jock background along with being a trucker for over 30 years that I find self autonomy , a sort of do it yourself approach more appropriate . But am open minded that we all choose whats right for oneself. And I do acknowledge my friends who have gone guru , do have warmth, and serenity, and are communial.

Guru

I agree with Ken that a guru is infinitely necessary if you really want to do it. In the tradition I follow it all happens due to the grace flowing through the guru. Being in the guru's physical presence is the real practice.

Also despite his telling you different the ego will just not cause himself to be transcended.
