Roger Walsh

Roger Walsh graduated with first-class honors from the University of Queensland with degrees in psychology, physiology, neuroscience, and medicine, while he worked as a circus acrobat and held world records in high diving and the trampoline. He went to Stanford University as a Fulbright scholar and passed licensing exams in medicine, psychology, and psychiatry before moving to the University of California at Irvine where he is currently professor of psychiatry, philosophy, and anthropology. His initial research and writings were in the area of neuroscience and received multiple national and international awards.

Initially extremely skeptical of all things religious and spiritual, he found his attitudes challenged and changed after he tried meditation for himself. He began to research meditation and related areas and to write extensively on topics such as spirituality and psychological well-being. His text on meditation received the "Outstanding Academic Book of 1984" Award, while his book, Paths Beyond Ego was a "Transformational Books" finalist and was listed among Common Boundary's "One Hundred Most Influential Psycho-spiritual Books of the Century". All told, his writings and research have received over twenty national and international awards, while his teaching has received one national award and he has been six times voted "Outstanding Teacher of the Year" by students at the University of California.

In this clip from the What Next Media Collection, Roger offers an inspiring reflection on all the things that we are doing in common, individually and collectively, in order to create a healthier community and a more vibrant movement. Roger also stresses the importance of establishing common ground with people who might possess very different values, beliefs, or worldviews than our own. The integral approach is not only capable of engaging and learning from differing and often conflicting perspectives, it actually depends on it—especially if we want integral theory to continue to grow in scope and relevance, and see integrally-informed solutions find some real traction in this world.

The 21st century is becoming an increasingly bizarre time, when a significant portion of humanity seems to be conducting a massive, unprecedented, world-wide lifestyle experiment. As Roger discusses in this video, people are spending more and more time indoors in artificial, nature free environments, with low-level artificial lighting. We are eating high calorie and nutrient-poor diets, and tend to get very little exercise compared to previous generations. We are completely and totally immersed in the online multimedia world, and exist as parts of huge, largely impersonal, often anonymous communities like Facebook, Reddit, or Twitter.

In other words, today's human beings are living very differently than their ancestors—and truth be told, we are only beginning to understand the impact this is having upon us. While there are certainly numerous benefits to our hyper-modernized world, it is clear that there are some detrimental effects as well—depression, anxiety, illness, etc. In this video, Roger describes eight of the most crucial lifestyle-based approaches to help restore balance and sanity to our frantic 21st-century lives....

How do you live your life free of regret?  How do you take the wisdom of the Integral vision and exercise it in your day to day life?  How do you move beyond the blame and guilt that so often festers in the basement of your psyche?  And why can it be so hard to simply be good?  Roger discusses this and more in his presentation on Integral Ethics, delivered at the 2010 Integral Theory Conference.

Given the extraordinary threats facing the world, this article explores the question, “How can integral studies and integral practitioners contribute most effectively to help resolve the great challenges of our time?” This article first explores integral ideas that might be particularly helpful, and then investigates ways in which individual integral practitioners can identify and optimize their own contributions.

In this exhilarating dialogue, Roger Walsh offers one of the finest overviews of the integral movement that we have ever seen—where we're at, where we've been, and where we're going. Now more than ever, the integral movement is poised to make a tremendous impact upon the world. Listen as Roger describes the current status of the movement, identifies some potential traps that we may fall into, and suggests some of the key ideas that the integral approach has to offer the rest of the world. Most importantly, you will learn what you can do in your own life, work, and play to help bring integral perspectives and solutions to a world that so desperately needs them.

Although integral ideas are spreading rapidly, the integral vision remains the province of what sociologists deem a “cognitive minority.” Extending and optimizing Integral Theory’s impact will require many things from practitioners, especially high-quality work and becoming “gnostic intermediaries.” Ways in which integral ideas can enhance practitioners’ own lives are surveyed, and the article then turns to potential traps that await both individuals and integral groups (e.g., egocentric misuse of integral ideas, developmental complacency, spiritual materialism, metapathologies and metadefenses, and failure to engage the mainstream). Antidotes to these traps are suggested so they may be transformed from stopping points into stepping stones.

Roger Walsh is the author of the book Essential Spirituality: The 7 Central Practices to Awaken Heart and Mind, which explores the universal teachings found at the core of all the world's great wisdom traditions. He presented these teachings to a previous Integral Leadership seminar held by Integral Institute, and we are proud to present a selection of pointing-out practices led by Roger during his presentation. Each clip is only 8-10 minutes long, and offers a quick and easy way to recontact the sacred dimensions of this and every moment. So choose one of the three clips, sit back, and let the next few moments be devoted to your Higher Self....
