Obama's First Year: The Good, the Bad, and the Partial

with Ken Wilber, Diane Musho Hamilton, Robb Smith, Aaliyah Haqq, and Bert Parlee

After last week's State of the Union Address, you may have been reflecting upon the past year of Obama's presidency and asking yourself a few questions:

  • How did he do?
  • Am I feeling inspired?
  • Am I benefiting in any real way from Obama's policies and his leadership?
  • Could Obama really be our first truly integral president, transcending and including the best of Democratic and Republican values?

We've been asking ourselves the same questions, and thought we would take a moment to offer our own integral assessment of President Obama's first national State of the Union Address. So we posed these questions (and a handful of others) to five very smart and savvy minds, who were kind enough to share five uniquely enlightening perspectives on Obama's first year: the good, the bad, and the partial. Spiritual Intelligence in Your Life

Do you know what your core values are? Could you make a list if you were asked? And would you then be able to take that list and actually prioritize your values? In this video, Cindy discusses the notion of "spiritual intelligence" in considerable detail, emphasizing the need to not only align our values with our highest self and highest aspirations, but to go a step further and actually rank our core values in order to help us make better decisions from day to day. Cindy then goes on to talk about some other important aspects of spiritual intelligence such as being able to understand other people's worldviews, recognizing spiritual teachings in everyday encounters, and cultivating a deep sense of trust and faith that we are somehow constantly being held by something infinitely greater than us, by whatever name. ILP and Men's Shadow Work: A Powerful Combination
Joe Perez

"The men's Integral Life Practice (ILP) group that I organized moves into its third meeting on Monday, and we're holding our first open meeting to open the doors to new members. I've been speaking with several prospective new members about the sort of experience they would find, and learning about the gifts offered by ILP to men's work, and vice versa. Nobody that I've talked to has been in an ILP group before, though they are all experienced in Integration Groups sponsored by The ManKind Project, a men's organization that conducts weekend experiential retreats called the New Warrior Training Adventure."

Integral Coaching, Coaching, and Therapy - What's the Difference?
Susan Hodges

"Coaching is gaining in popularity, and confusion exists as to how it differs from therapy and how Integral Coaching differs from both. Many factors contribute to this confusion. In reality, a plethora of approaches to coaching and therapy exist. Ample similarities and differences are apparent not only between these professions, but also within them. Furthermore, Integral Coaching is unlike other forms of coaching and therapy. Taken as a whole, they represent a legacy intent on alleviating suffering and facilitating change. This article provides a more comprehensive overview of therapy and coaching so as to dispel misunderstanding and honor Integral Coaching Canada’s unique contribution to both human development and consciousness evolution.."

Spiralling Upwards
Linda Hollier

"Walking through the streets of Vienna some years ago, a friend of mine reminded me to “always look upwards” as the different storeys of the buildings there often have different styles of architecture. I have maintained this practice when visiting new places, and yesterday as I walked through the Dubai Mall I was struck by the number of domes that have been incorporated into the building. Stopping to take note of them (walking looking upwards would have proved too perilous amidst the multitude of shoppers hunting for bargains during the Dubai Shopping Festival ), I was able to appreciate their variety and beauty.
