Obama's quietness in Libya's revolution

Obama has been very quiet in his response to the revolution in Libya.  Is this because of the Americans marooned on the boat that's waiting for good weather so it can leave?  Or is it a more genius move on Obama's part?

On the first possibility, it is understandable that Obama and NATO are waiting for foreigners to have evacuated before taking any action.  The media is calling for action, but not even a no fly zone has been enforced.

However, the case can be made that Obama is hopeful that the other cities in Libya will self-organize and move into Tripoli themselves.  It would be genius if that happens and Obama saw it coming.  It would allow Libya to free themselves and catapult their pride in their country and not give those opposed to change a reason to hate the Westerners.

Or, the inactivity could lead to disastrous casualties and maybe lead to Gadhafi holding on to power.  What do you folks think?

it's not a happy subject but…

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

Happy Friday Alan,

It's not clear to me exactly what you mean by quiet from Mr. Obama, especially when he's been speaking up in forceful terms clearly siding with those seeking the downfall of Mr. Gadhafi.

In spite of these obvious sympathies my best guess is that Mr. Obama and his administration clearly understands that Libya is mostly a European problem. The ties between Libya and Italy are long-standing and most of Libya's oil production goes directly to Italy.

Mr. Gadhafi's is widely known for his weirdness and wilyness and has given no sign whatsoever that he is willing to abandon his position as leader of Libya. Additionally much of the cementing of that position has been accomplished through arms deals with the United Kingdom. This makes direct military assault on his bastion in Tripoli by underequipped militias very difficult.

A quick end to these hostilities is likely dependent on continuing defections by Mr. Gadhafi's supporters; barring that we may be in for a siege of considerable duration.

Meanwhile the Saudis are perfectly capable of making up whatever deficit in the world oil supply is caused by this popular uprising.

The longest view open to me in situations like this holds that ‘evil’ tends to consume itself…

Warmly,

Charles

why do you care?

i don't care.  i don't see why any other country's action is of any meaning to us at all.  and why does obama have to speak?  if someone should speak it should be the people.

thanks for your perspective though...
