beyond this mortal coil
This beyond the mortal coil conversation was interesting, as usual. The woman asking the question and the following up with the second idea sounded so well and authentically balanced, poised for this opportunity with Ken. I had a similarly positive impression of the first questioner who asked about higher self structures. (I haven't listened to the second yet.)
One of the things that I liked about this Q & A was how short it was. Really. I'm sure that entire books have been written about this question as to what of a person survives death.
In answer, Ken said something like that what survives, beyond the individual egoic historic memory and self sense, were two things: a knowing of the totality, the highest developmental reaches achieved by that being (soul) of wisdom and of virtue. Wisdom particularly is expressed through the knowing of emptiness and virtue of good deeds. This was a Tibetan Buddhist view.
My understanding and sense of this? I am still far, far away from this sounding anything more than story. It doesn't ring True True in my mind and perhaps more of me.
What I do like about this explanation is that when you compare it with most stories of the afterlife with all their AQAL addressed cultural, religious, and quirkily individual elaborations, this is quite simple, modest and relatedly elegant, and related believable.
There is a way that I am working to make more room for this, partly motivated by thinking that this may simply be a reality over my head and I ought to engage it a little, just in case.
By consciously conflating a collective human story of wisdom/emptiness, a collective that likely continues for some long time, I can see how an evolution of emptiness-acknowledgement-and-affinity might happen until all story is so suffused with essence, isness perhaps, I'll say, that the individual characteristics disappear from individual awareness. Possible, though almost an infinite stretch of imagination for me.
As for virtue, a tallying of good deeds and capacity for engaging life without evil, that sounds to me still a bit carrot and stick, a vestige arising deeply from culture and projecting mind - Story.
I like that I don't feel much charge from Ken or even the questioner around the question and the answer, though she may have felt some joy that was more than just the sweet opportunity and interaction. I don't feel as much charge as I used to, largely since I don't know and since I'm not sure I can influence outcome of the storied lifetimes that would come we're this true.

mortal coiling & uncoiling
Posted January 20th, 2012 by Layman PascalPersonally I have oozed into strong intuitive (although highly abstract) convictions regarding disembodied existence.
This should always be a natural growth. And like Ambo we should rejoice in any discussions on this topic which are unforced, open, straightforward and not tinged with the aura of ideological pressure.
Although beliefs have some utility to guide lives and relieve stress they are no basis for actual metaphysical, cosmological or ontological conclusions about Reality.
Only pondering, experimentation & personal soul-work can give us the answers which are acceptable to ourselves and part of this authenticity is the need to be fully present with our modern doubts.
We need to both embrace and suspect our own doubts so that they may become fertile sources of organic insight.
For me, certain subtle qualities have revealed themselves as essential and "portable" facets of the subtle body.
I expect these qualities to persist in disembodied conditions.
What are these qualities? The general feeling which seems attached to virtue development. The basic matrix of world-comprehension & depth (though it may well lose its content). The capacity for mind strength. The acquired degree of being-integration of thought heart & sensation.
These are associated with the pre-frontal cortext and bio-electric fields in the UR. They are also associated with social teachings. Clearly any social teachings can be "suggestive, pressurized" propaganda. So we must be on guard (in our discernment, not our hearts).
From my perspective, the song doesn't end when the radio breaks down. But this is matter for personal discovery -- not for encouraged belief or merely public assertion in conformity with superstitious ideation.
Thanks, I've been...
