Insanity or Spiritual Growth
I have a long term interest in the way that spiritual growth experiences are viewed in our society. We have a culture of narcissim, quick fixes and short attention spans. Besides the fact that spiritual development is not usually high on the priorities of most, when spiritual awakening begins to happen to someone, they can easily be talked right out of it by well-meaning mental health practitioners. As a family therapist to those who tend to be on the fast track to evolving in one or more areas of their lives, I often see inappropriate pathologizing of spiritual crises.
As we have all seen in the New Age Movement - the ones that are actually paying some attention to spiritual experiences - it is a common misperception that the path to spiritual enlightenment is full of great illuminations, flashes of insight & visions, reduction of traumas and tragedies, smoothing out the rough experiences of life, getting more of what you want, the increased desire to help others and having good relationships with everyone. Any of these experiences may happen, and hopefully several will.
However, as many of us in the Integral Movement, and spiritual traditions will agree - there is another important part of the spiritual experience that deserves more attention. Any warrior of the spiritual path will report the experience of the dark night of the soul, or a few dark night occasions. It is the death of the Ego. And, death can be excrucitating. Those who are adverse to facing pain will run and hide from deep spiritual awakening. With one dip in the dark night fire they will fear losing their minds, falling apart, never to be put back together.
Those with knowledge, courage and determination will not turn from the pain and suffering for long. For this pain has been provided to them from a compassionate Spirit. It is actually the portal to deeper awakening. Too many spiritual growth experiences are pathologized by modern psychotherapists as problems needing a diagnosis and quick fix. My hope is that more people will realize the gift within pain and suffering when they encounter it, will find guidance, and will yearn to evolve. And, that more people will find the courage to look deep inside to find the secrets hiding in plain view. We should contemplate our role in this evolution.
My next collection of poems, titled RedFlame DeepWater, is a pivitol series for me. The collection is about the, sometimes intense, events on the path to spiritual enlightenment. It includes a symbolic description of the experience referred to as "the dark night of the soul." The dark night of the soul is a time when everything you thought was "real" in yourself and in your life is disintegrating. It is a time when Spirit is cleaning your house to make room for new awareness. Some describe this experience as the transformational initiation into higher levels of development and deeper awareness.
My first poem in the collection, RedFlame Initiates Destruction, describes the experience of the dark night as it begins. And, it illustrates the mystery of sudden, unexplained events that evoke feelings of loss and uncertainty. Through my sequential collection of poems, I will continue to illuminate the inner experiences of one of the most misunderstood of spiritual experiences.
I would love to hear stories about the experiences that others on this list had at the beginning of one of their spiritual awakenings or dark nights of the soul.

RedFlame DeepWater
RedFlame Initiates Destruction
Out of the abyss, erupted RedFlame,
Intruding in my life, and holding others to blame.
I was content in routine, and collecting possessions,
Ignoring nudges to change, and nursing obsessions.
This beautiful place I have created,
And built indestructible.
Now the RedFlame is baited.
Burning everything combustible.
RedFlame is enraged,
Ravaging all in it's path.
Ravenous consumption engaged,
Incinerating my security with wrath.
RedFlame is flashing bright,
Blinding & Burning my sight!
RedFlame is dancing to be free,
Taunting & Teasing me to flee!
Painful Scorching & Singeing!
Unbearable Searing & Stinging!
Aflame inside and out, a terrible storm,
So much is forced to give up present form.
Raging with smoke,
Making me choke.
Attempting to hide,
all that has died.
All I want was here.
All I have collected was here.
All I love was here.
All I know was here.
All I feel was here.
All I have built for my life,
RedFlame is destroying with strife!
RedFlame seeks to exterminate,
My Self to eradicate,
My Life to ameliorate,
My Possessions to amputate.
Helpless to extinguish, even the slightest possession.
I want to retreat and withdraw, to hide from this transgression.
But my survival is at stake! I must preserve what I can!
I must fight the fury! And ruin the destructive plan!
“Stop taking what is MINE!”
I yell – raging back!
I rant, rave and whine,
But I am under attack.
The more I rage, the more I burn,
Twisted travesty awaits at every turn....
continued....Since my poem is long - the rest is on my post at - RedFlame Initiates Destruction - Pt.1

Dark Night of the Soul
Posted July 10th, 2009 by Linda HollierThank you for introducing a topic that has been of interest to me for some time now.
Are you aware of the work of John Weir Perry in this regard? In “Trials of the Visionary Mind” he writes for instance that “certain psychic states, presently treated as acute ‘psychotic’ sickness, should instead be honoured as valid operations of the visionary mind playing its rightful part in the spiritual development of individuals and of cultures.”
I also seem to recall that he studied the drawings of persons going through such experiences and found many commonalities.
With so many more individuals engaging in spiritual practices, I find it imperative that this topic receive further attention - not only for the sake of individuals so affected, but also for the sake of those whose task it is to guide people through such situations.
“The Dark Night of the Soul” as described by the mystic, St. John of the Cross, with its purification of the senses and then the spirit can be exceptionally frightening for those not aware of what is happening to them.

). Your comment about describing a space that can be dark and dangerous is very true. There is great vulnerability when going through these times. And, there is often shadow elements coming into these experiences in addition to a mixure of emotional challenges, social challenges, personality inclinations, and sometimes there is a little psychopathology involved. And, at first, when these experiences strike, it can be a loud, scary, jumbled mess. This is where good counsel and wise guides are so invaluable.
That would be a good movie.
