The Limits of Science, Promise of Future Revolution
Can the scientific method prove whether or not YOU love someone? You can say that you do. But you might be lying. We can look at your brain and see synapsis firing. But this happens with all thoughts and feelings. The scientific method is valid for the material Universe. But can do little to understand consciousness on the inside as it's experienced by the individual. To know the inside is only possible through direct experience.
Since this is the case, we can already see how the scientific method is not the end all in our discoveries throughout humanity's history. Science has yet to explain premonition. There are millions of documented cases where people have felt like they shouldn't get on a plane or get into the car with someone, and these planes and cars have crashed and killed everyone on board. There are billions of people who have experienced premonitions. There are billions of people who have experienced synchronicity. When we bring it up, we are looked down upon by those considering themselves to be scientifically-minded. However, it doesn't take away the truth of these things.
I'll bring-up an instance here, but I would prefer not to be judged or called "New Age" because I'm not. I don't have any beliefs about this, I just have this one of hundreds of experiences like this, which I think is interesting: A few years back when I was a smoker of cigarettes in California, I was sitting at a coffee shop with my friend, Alexis. She said, "Do you have any cigarettes?" I said, "No." We both sat there for a minute. Spontaneously and without thinking about it, I said, "Let's envision ourselves smoking right now." We both closed our eyes and did so. Then Alexis said, "I'm going to go see Ben at the tattoo shop, I'll be back in a bit." She left and when she did a friend, Jodi, came up to me after parking her car on the street and said, "Hey Billy, I have three packs of smokes in my purse, do you want one?" I said, "Sure," and she threw me a pack and walked off. Then Alexis returned about a minute later and said, "You'll never guess what happened. I went to see Ben and he wasn't there. But the owner, Jay, said to me, 'Hey Alexis, here's 20 bucks. Go to the store and get me a pack of smokes, get yourself a pack and keep the change.'" Neither of us were the types to ask others for cigarettes. We both just happened to be downtown without any money or smokes.
This type of thing happens all of the time. And I'm not satisfied with the "New Age" explanations. But there are no scientific explanations for this mysterious type of happening that happen every day for all of us. So what do we do about this? We are left with no explanation. And we all come up with our own. But nobody can agree, because it's not scientifically provable or even able to be studied. So the scientific method, as it is today, is unable to be a tool for studying this type of portion of the Universe. The method has fallen short as the great promise of revealing to us everything about the Universe. It can look at physical and mostly inert things. But it cannot predict random events of synchronicity and premonitions and much more. It is unable to do a controlled study about random occurrences. And what does science do about this? It says, "Well, these things don't exist in the first place. These things are New Age ideas. They are anti-scientific. They are superstitious ridiculousness." So, science basically insults all people on Earth, because we all have these types of experiences, by saying they are mere fantasies or childish dreams, not scientific, and therefore crazy. So what do we do about all of this?
Academia as it exists today ignores all of this "extra" that science has deemed unworthy of consideration, simply because science hasn't figured it out and has no way to, as it stands today.
Science is a pair of binoculars. And these binoculars are useful for looking at certain things. But binoculars are useless for looking at the cosmic radiation at the far ends of the Universe. We can only use the scientific method to understand a tenth of our Universe, perhaps. We will need a whole new type of revolution to be able to finally study, prove, and understand the other 90 percent. And these percentages are made-up in my mind. They are probably way off. But I think the point is made, here.
Is anyone even comfortable bringing up and talking about any of your experiences with premonitions and synchronicity? I think if we all post a few examples of this, we'll all feel the odd feeling of resistance. We don't want to be judged. And the prevailing science and its influence over what is socially acceptable is behind this resistance. But I would like to hear more. Because I'm sure that every single one of us has an example of something interesting and unexplainable that has happened in our own lives. Willing to share?

Changed Behavior!
Posted April 18th, 2010 by Mary Linda LandauerHello Billy and Anne,
Thank you both for taking this inquiry to further our undestanding that objective science needs its other half; subjective science/ experience. You know when you really look into this deeper, one has to appreciate that most great discoveries, from the understanding of gravity, to the modern day technology of computer chips, that all these were born out of the subjective and intersubjective mind. The mind in it's free and flowing oneness with (whatever name you want to give to this evolutionary force) this powerful current feeds us these ideas and greater breakthroughs. Sometimes in the shower, no less. I believe so deeply....and much comes out of my own subjective spiritual experiences, that has changed the entire course of my life......so these powerful inner changes need to be looked at by all of science....together..... working and collaborating to see how this may be the direction we need to put more research and investigation into.
One of our community members gave out a web site on the research being done in this area, www.nfb,ca/film/mystical_brain, produced by Isabella Raynauld. I was transfixed watching this, knowing in my heart this is our next great direction. Yet, this research is being met with that divide, the hard core sciences staying fixed, not wanting to join in this revolutionary direction.
William James, Varieties of Religious Experience, spoke of this divide between the sciences of objectivity and subjectivity years ago. But the truth and validity of the experience must be in the fruit it produces, as he states. The changed behavior. And, this alone must be the impetus to move these sciences forward together to see how minds can be moved into greater complexity of consciousness, and greater levels of comphehenion of loving one another, respecting one another and being helpful to one another, because this is what will bring forth the fruits of peace and harmony in the world.
The mind that has made this leap from ego idenitfication to soul identification ( again if soul doesn't work for you just use Universial love or the understanding this higher idenitification is oneness where we cannot even contemplate harm to another).......just Billy, as your freind could not harm the tiny insect, knowing it was part of the life force.) But for the mass population today, sadly, it identifys with ego patterns of energy that are mostly exclusive in nature, and set to divide against any and all who do not agree with its beliefs, ideas, or God.....its really taken us now to a place, where we need to agree that its okay to not agree, but still hold deep respect with no harm, bodily or verbally, to another holding a different belief.
But, this leap within humanity to allow science/religion.....science/science.....politics...left and right.....medicine....allopathic/alternative.......whatever the discipline/institution.....now is the hour to bring a more higher consciousness, allowing for greater cooperation and collaboration, in order to unite our great divides.....and, to do this, of course, as Ken as so elegantly designed in the quadrants, we, the collective, must bring both our interiors and exteriors together, creating a more Holistic humanity and world for all of us.
Any thoughts or further ideas to how this can be approached to begin this merger?
With love.
Mary Linda

On and on we go....
Posted April 18th, 2010 by Billy GuilfoyleWhere we stop, no one knows. Love yall. It's been a great few discussions we've had lately. I think Rustin is doing a great job of stirring up the pot and practicing writing with us. He reminds me of Ken, the way he writes sometimes. And he kind of looks like him, like younger him.
I really do see world peace being inevitable. I don't know, it just seems that this is where we've been moving toward for a long time now. I think technology is playing a tremendous role in all of this. Global Peace Studies is now a major in the majority of United States universities. There are over a million humanitarian aid organizations on Earth today, and 90% of those didn't exist 25 years ago. Africa is the last place, pretty much, that is still way behind technologically. They aren't internet savvy there. I hope there comes a non-profit called 'Computers for Africans." My friend went on a date with a guy who works at Google in San Francisco area and there is this room with a huge screen that shows all of these colored dots of people who are simultaneously on line all over the entire Earth. It's a map. Red dots mean the person is searching in english, green means portugese, yellow for french, purple for spanish, etc...and you really see the disparity in the world...Africa is very dark on that map!
Those last few sentences were her words. But I think if we get Africa connected, we will see a tremendous leap toward global peace, for some reason. I also think sending all of our children abroad for a year between the ages of 8 and 15 would be neat. Some kind of mass cultural exchange. We have such creative minds and brilliant means now, so I don't see why it wouldn't take less than 20 years or so to see the first ever time when there is no war anywhere on Earth. I'm glad to be alive and youthful at this time.
much love to you,
Billy

Tapping into Inspiration
Posted April 19th, 2010 by Rustin SelveyIt seems crystal clear to me that the highest form of every human pursuit is trans-ego inspiration. I'm learning to play the guitar and the first song I learnt was Bob Dylan Tambourine Man. I looked into the meaning and the only one that convinced me was apparently Dylan's own explanation of the meaning, which was that it was a song of a musician to his muse.
Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin’ ship
My senses have been stripped, my hands can’t feel to grip
My toes too numb to step
Wait only for my boot heels to be wanderin’
I’m ready to go anywhere, I’m ready for to fade
Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way
I promise to go under it
Dylan was inspired. You cannot be inspired when you are holding onto your ego. You need to drop it and tap in to that mystical spark, and yeah it sounds a lot like love to me. But when I play the guitar - I'm still learngin the notes, so its difficult for the mystical spark to truly flow. But everyone's good at something and once you've gone through the stages of learning the rules, then internalising (mastering) the rules, if you then think about the mental state you adopt in peak performance it will resemble egoless inspiration. Wilber gives a good description of it in Integral Psychology using the concepts of conop, formop etc.
And if you think of any great person, you soon come to see they were trans-ego and inspired. The old adage "dont think about it too much or you'll stuff it up" is very real and is the same thing. "Let it flow". "Just go with it". Whether its Einstein scribbling brand new scientific knowledge on an old pad, or a sportswoman weaving through the defense to score a slam dunk, or Kate Winslet acting in Revolutionary Road, or a musician on stage transporting the entire audience to another world, or Ali knocking out Foreman, or Martin Luther King Jr talkin about a dream, or you guys typing away on this blog and giving it your all, its the mystical spark in full effect. And its something we can all tap into any time.
What this all proves to me is that everyone is indeed going conscious. The direction is clear. Its past ego and toward inspiration in every field of human endeavour. Imagine a world where that inspiration was the norm for the majority.
When I look at nature I see a wild and beautiful cacophony of mystical sparks so dense it's overwhelming. Do the monkeys see this? I dont know. But I doubt it. We do. But the ego is what enabled us to see it. It brought its own story. But like Billy I think that story will come to a close and inspiration will take over. We're in the midst of that right now.
Neither science nor evolutionary theory is in any way inconsistent with inspiration. Ego is inconsistent with inspiration. Dont believe the hype.

Listening now
Posted April 19th, 2010 by Billy GuilfoyleI'm listening to Dylan's song now. It's always nice to throw up a tune your friends are writing about as you read their words.
I love the guitar. I picked up the guitar about 4 years ago. I've not been big on practicing and pushing myself to try new things. But I enjoyed getting to the point of knowing the basic chords and teaching myself how to pick a little. Here's a song I wrote that I threw some synthesized violins behind. Hope you might enjoy it: www.ilike.com/artist/search
Everyone is going conscious. I think you just inspired me to go buy another guitar. Sold my last one before leaving California. Thanks, my friend.
