Meeting Mokshananda, Reading SES!
I'd like to say thanks to Durwin Foster, from Integral Life, for giving me the heads up on Mokshananda living in Santa Cruz and giving weekly Satsang. I went on Sunday and met the Realized Gentleman. Not only that, but I met some of the most beautiful people I've ever met in my life at the Free Water Sangha, Mokie's community. When the microphone came my way I said, "Mokie, I found out about you after bitching in a blog on Integral Life about the fact that I landed in Santa Cruz and found no White Plum Zen Lineage associations or Zendos and Durwin Foster replied and said, "Mokshandanda lives in Santa Cruz!" I told him that I am following an integral life practice and living in the woods illegally (though I didn't say "illegally," but I figured I'd throw that in there for piquing interest here in this blog).
Then, Mokie (as he's called by friends), said, "Oh, we have a Ken Wilber fan. Well you're in the right company." My heart soared! I asked who else has read Wilber, and the hands went up and I felt at home for the first time in my entire life. I told Mokie that I'm reading Sex, Ecology, and Spirituality, and he said, "One of the greatest books ever written," and I said, "I'm only on page 40," and he said, "It's still one of the greatest books ever written." I think he's just the guy to help with transcending ego. He has this deep look that is almost scary. It's like he can see into your soul and you're not sure if he's curiously and wonderingly looking into you, or if he's gazing into your ego and hating you! Or is it your own thoughts on the matter? Quite cool.
So, I'm now on page 70 of SES, and this is literally my favorite book ever written. Imagine if Lao Tzu had been born in the 1940's or 50's. He would have written SES. This is literally the Tao Te Ching meets all knowledge applicable since its original writing. And this very analogy shows how far consciousness has come since 2500 years ago. To learn of the balance between yin and yang, masculine and feminine, agency and communion, and then to look around at an out of balance human society and world of societies, to see the bigger picture and see one's self within this context, this is to get a bigger picture of one's self, thus making yourself more capable, more aware, more in the know, more able to love, to be effective, to be centered, to be more compassionate and understanding. SES is Lao Tzu, Emerson, Alan Watts, and Louise J. Halle on crack!
Again, thank you to Durwin Foster for changing my life forever. And thank you to Ken Wilber for bringing us together so we can all share and commune and have a chance to change lives and have our lives changed.
Much much much love,
Billy Guilfoyle
