- Is this new content?

No. These are some of my personal favorites from the past few years, reformatted as m4b AudioBooks.

- What's the difference between m4b and mp3?

The m4b format tells iTunes to handle these files differently than it does conventional mp3's. For one, it pulls these dialogues out of your music library, organizing them instead in your "Books" folder on iTunes. This makes your Integral Life library much easier to manage. Also, these files are bookmarkable, which means that if you stop anywhere in the track and put on some music instead, it will pick up right where you left off the next time you resume the dialogue. Some players (such as my iPad) allow you to rewind 30 seconds at the press of a button, which can be very useful for some of our more dense interviews.

- What software do I need to play m4b files?

These files are only compatible with iTunes, on either Mac or PC platforms.

- Can I convert mp3's I've already downloaded into AudioBook format?

Kind of. There are a few hoops you would need to jump through in order to convert mp3's into m4v's, which a simple Google search should help you with. But there is also a way you can set your iTunes to handle specific mp3's as AudioBooks: simply right-click the track in iTunes, select the "options" tab, then set "Media Kind" to AudioBook. Note that this does not actually add any meta-data to the file itself, and only the iTunes software you used to change the Media Kind will treat the mp3 as an AudioBook (which means that if you transfer it to another computer, it will return to the default "Music" setting assigned to all mp3's.)

- I've converted my own mp3's, and now i just have one massive AudioBook titled "www.IntegralLife.com".

This is due to the way we used to assign meta-data (e.g. Artist, Album, Genre, etc.) to the mp3's. I have recently changed our meta-data convention to use the master title of the talk in the "album" field, which is what allows multiple "books" to be created. I have retro-actively updated the meta-data for the majority of our audio mp3's on the site and reuploaded them to the server--but if you have already downloaded them, you would need to either re-download the interviews or fix the meta-data yourself.

- I notice that these AudioBooks are encoded at 64kbps, and most Integral Life mp3 files are encoded at 48kbps. Are these higher quality recordings? In most cases, no. Because most of these dialogues are recorded on the phone, the sound quality of the recordings are limited--which means that if you were to listen to two versions a phone interview, one at 48kbps and the other at 128kbps, it would be extremely difficult to notice any difference at all, other than a much larger file size.

Errors

Thanks for putting these into M4b format - makes my life easier :)

At least 2 of the audiobooks won't download - I get an error message every time I try to download these:

  • Integral Ethics - Roger Walsh & Ken Wilber
  • Buddha Is As Buddha Does - Lama Surya Das & Ken Wilber

I also thought I should mention that it is nearly impossible to FIND this page on the website - I certainly can't do it myself.  The only way I know how to get here, and how I found out about it in the first place, is through a link in one of the newsletters.

Thanks again for the new audio format!

Justin

How can I transfer them to an ipod?

I had some of these books in the iTunes of my PC. I can listen them in my PC. Now I have bought an iPod Touch but when I syncronise it with the iTunes these books don't appear in the screen, so I cannot syncronise them. Do I need some app in the ipod order to see the books in the iTunes and then transfer them to de iPod? What should I do to have them also in de iPod?

Thank You

On M4b format

I suppose those who are avid mac users have no qualms using M4b format. That's fine but why not have these talks in mp3 as well?

All my lectures that I get from FORA tv and other sources are mp3 which I can play on my car radio but it can't play M4b. I'd have to purchase software to reformat them; I should not have to do this. For those who feel as I, what I do is fire up the voice activated Wavepad sound editor software which is free, play the M4b in i-Tunes and let Wavepad  record while I listen and do other things at work and at home. Once the talk is finished, I can save it as mp3, burn it on a CD with other talks and listen to it while I drive.

On other matters, how do you meditated with tinnitus?

George
