The Many Faces of Terrorism

Chapter 11—The AQAL Code: A Guided Tour of You

The Many Faces of Terrorism is a nonfiction novel (actually, a trilogy of novels), a follow-up to Boomeritis.  It is set three years after Boomeritis, and involves the continuing exploits of the staff of Integral Center, in Cambridge, Mass. (Of course, this is all loosely based on Integral Institute/Integral Life, but only loosely.)  Rumors have been circulating for months that IC has discovered "the Code," although exactly what the Code is remains unclear—it is rumored to be everything from further DNA programs to the secret of absolutely everything.

I liked it

Finally we get a glimpse into this mysterious trilogy. I read the excerpt all the way down and I thought I'd just share some impressions on it.

  • I'm not sure if Ken is gonna win a Nobel prize with this. But okay, that's not the point - I remember him saying that he wanted to write some bad novels after finishing his philosophical work, so the Nobel Prize was not his goal to begin with, I guess. It's more like some kind of infotainment, actually.
  • Ken Wilber (the real one) seems to have a talent for university lectures, otherwise he couldn't have written about an integral lecture in such a entertaining and realistic way. Yes, I know the Kevins, Ronnies and Brendas of today's auditoriums; unfortunately the Kims (and Kens) seem to be a rare species.
  • Cool: he mentions some bands that play a role in contemporary pop culture (like the Red Hot Chili Peppers)  This may seem rather unimportant, but I liked it anyway. Hey, Ken: if you would mention Kurt Cobain in your book, I would really appreciate it :-P And of course it would sell better, but you know this already, don't cha.
  • Not-so-cool: the excerpt ends with a teaser! What is the AQAL code really about? And why knows Ken Wilber (the hero of the novel) more about it than we (the readers) do? Questions, questions, questions. Is this untold secret worth investing $20 bucks in a hardcopy? We'll see... For now, I'm hooked. Ask me again later.
