In Hot Water
But can we jump out? Is there any hope for us at all? Can we possibly transform in time—and if so, how? On the one hand, transformation is an utterly mysterious process, often happening suddenly, violently, and without any warning at all. On the other hand, Western science has very proficiently demonstrated that evolutionary leaps—both biological and psychological—tend to occur when environmental pressures demand them to. According to the biological fossil record, this has usually been due to such things as drastic climate change or the geological merging of two previously isolated ecosystems. In terms of psychological development, when asking the question "why do people transform?," we can look to the concept of the "dialectic of progress," which essentially states that every new stage of psychological growth brings with it its own "good news" and "bad news," the good news of each stage being the resolution of the bad news from the previous stage.
Taking this sort of evolutionary view can actually be a great source of solace for those who might feel somewhat overwhelmed in the face of our current global crises, as feelings of hopelessness and desperation begin to seep in through the cracks of disillusionment. If evolution has shown us anything at all, it is a silent yet unyielding current that tirelessly flows toward ever-greater depth, complexity, and emergence—like a mighty river that patiently but relentlessly carves through anything in it's path. There is nothing that can stop this extraordinary force. Evolution has never taken a U-turn—even when the asteroid that killed off the dinosaurs struck the earth, it only cleared the path for mammals to inherit the planet, marking a critical leap forward for the evolution of life. We are not separate from this evolutionary process—indeed, humanity itself is the vehicle through which evolution is slowly becoming self-aware. And by recognizing this fact we can consciously bear the responsibility of our extraordinary heritage, billions of years in the making, and continue to breathe life and light into a long-slumbering universe. We are evolution—all of our beauty, brilliance, and blemishes—and that is itself a tremendous source of faith, guidance, and inspiration. From this evolutionary perspective, the question seems to shift from the detached and dis-empowered "can we make it through this?," to the much more positive and pragmatic "how is this going to go down, and how can I help?" One thing is clear: we are dealing with an entirely new set of global challenges, the likes of which are absolutely unprecedented, and which will require nothing less than an Integral perspective to even begin to address. Our problems are so inextricably interwoven, that none of them can be addressed individually without making the others worse—our environmental crises, our economic crises, our energy crises, our culture-wars crises, and nearly every other crisis we are currently facing all need to be addressed simultaneously, or else our very best intentions incur disastrous results. An immediate example of this can be seen in America's efforts to invest in biofuel technologies, which is made from food crops such as corn and sugar cane, in reaction to oil prices approaching $100 per barrel. 25% of the country's corn supply is currently being dedicated to developing viable ethanol-based alternatives to fossil fuels, which is in turn raising the costs of corn in the global food market, exacerbating the already horrific food crisis the world is currently experiencing. If we are not careful, and do not approach these problems with the level of sophistication that they demand, our very best intentions will likely incur devastating effects upon many of the vulnerable populations of our world. Add to that the fact that it requires a fairly advanced cognitive capacity to even be able to recognize many of these global crises, and a similarly-advanced moral intelligence to care enough to do anything about it, and things might begin to seem dire indeed—especially since the people with this level of cognitive and moral sophistication form a painful minority in the world, and their voices are often lost in the white noise of our increasingly lowest-common-denominator focused media. So if that's the bad news of our current predicament—that all these problems are really massive, really tangled, and people are dying right now because it is so damned difficult to untangle—what, then, is the good news? As Jim Garrison and Ken mention in one Integral Life dialogue, we already have everything we need to solve the majority of these problems, in terms of the technological means that are required. We are not short on technological solutions, we are short on will. As Ken says, "Nobody on this planet goes to bed at night hungry because of lack of food. They go to bed at night hungry because of lack of political ideas, and the lack of political systems to get them the food." Adding to our previous example, we are currently in the midst of a horrific food crisis, as food costs continue to skyrocket around the world, and millions of men, women, and children are forced to starve to death—and yet, this crisis does not stem from any sort of real food shortage. In fact, many economists claim that we currently have a global food surplus—and though what exactly "food surplus" means remains a highly debated topic, it suggests exactly the sorts of politically systemic problems we are actually struggling with. There is more good news—we are currently witnessing the evolutionary rise of a new stage of psychological development, the only one properly equipped with the right tools to make sense of our tangled web of a world. A new generation of Integral thinkers are beginning to emerge, just as our world begins to cry for an Integral response. It is happening around the globe, on both elite and grassroots levels of influence—and make no mistake about it, they are the future of this world, if a future is to be had. As Jim Garrison mentions, "everything we're doing now is happening within the context of a grand historical denouement that is not too distant down the trail…." And, we would add, only the rise of Integral consciousness allows for the sort of synthesis between spiritual realization, scientific reasoning, and civic duty that we so desperately need. And assuming you have any interest at all in such Integral topics as these, you are part of this evolutionary wave. And by simply acknowledging this fact you vow not to remain an idle spectator to the world, but an evolutionary agent within it. So, finally, we come to the all-important question: "what now?" As Integral thinkers, practitioners, leaders, artists, and activists, it is essential that we live up to a new standard of global citizenship, in which some sort of civic engagement becomes as intrinsic to our personal practice as any meditation, study, or physical exercise. These inner-focused practices must be allowed to come to fruition and find full expression in the world, or else we begin to swallow and smother our own light, rather than sharing it with those who need it most.
INTEGRAL CIVICS IN FIVE GENERIC STEPS Step 1 – Wake up! Continue to practice, practice, practice, in as many fundamental areas of your life as you can. If our problems demand an Integral response, the Integral response demands your ongoing efforts to enact it. This is arguably the most important step, which is why it is the first step—but it cannot be the only step. Step 2 - Get informed! If you wish to do something to help the world, then you need to understand what is going on. Find perspectives that you trust, and use the Integral framework to deepen your understanding of these perspectives. While many feel that staying in touch with the news in our sound-byte-driven media can feel like standing on a mountain of marbles, there are indeed sane and stable voices out there, who retain some degree of journalistic integrity. Find those voices. Step 3 – Interact! Share your perspective with your friends, your family, and your community, Integral or otherwise. Pay attention to where you agree, and where you disagree, while keeping in mind that, from an Integral perspective, everyone is always right—even if some are more right than others. Simply sharing your ideas and values with others helps to further refine and focus your views, especially while keeping an eye out for your own personal and cultural shadows, biases, and blind spots. Step 4 - Get involved! Decide what level of engagement works for you, whether that means donating a portion of your disposable income to a particular cause or candidate that you resonate with, all the way to taking it to the streets in public protest—of course, at an absolute minimum, if you have any Integral perspective at all, you should be voting! Step 5 - Wake up! The alpha and omega of Integral civics. You are asleep, and are having a dream. In that dream, millions of people are suffering needlessly. What is the best way to immediately liberate all of these people, to alleviate all of this pain? Just open your eyes, and wake up. Now. Politics and self-awareness
Posted September 1st, 2011 by Kartik SubbaraoCorey, I respect your integral perspective on the world's challenges, and your genuine interest in contributing to effective solutions.
For me, the process of "waking up" has included identifying and then consciously letting go of identifications that I have formed over years of unconscious conditioning. I have found that the field of politics has been an absolute landmine of my mental projections.
There have been several issues on which I once argued extremely passionately (on one side of the polarity or the other), where I now look at and feel no attachment/identification with either pole. There are other issues where I still have a preferred position, but I'm able to stay more present while other views are expressed. I see how my views are shaped by my present level of awareness, my temperament, and my history. I'm better able to see how others across the political spectrum form their views, and by recognizing those same processes within myself, I'm able to empathize with the motivations, even if I end up coming to different conclusions.
The most important outcome of the awakening process (thus far) for me has been to realize that my "passion" for political debate with others was largely a matter of shadow-boxing. As those shadows evaporate, I find that I really don't feel much of a calling (at the moment, at least) to participate in government. I follow the news, read up on issues that I feel concerned about, and vote in those elections/races where I have a preference for one candidate over another. But that's the extent of my political involvement, and I'm content with that.
I do remain open to the possibility of greater involvement in government in the future. One scenario might be as Government 2.0 initiatives evolve, and I see a clear opportunity to contribute my technological skills to societal goals.

Wow, deeply connected
Posted September 1st, 2011 by Brian OConnellI deeply connected to this article. I guess the first time I read it, I was just so upset by the misinfo Jim Garrison was expressing in the three audio's that I was unable to see the great message, a prophetic message, this is. I connected to this article more then anything else put out by anyone in the Integral community. But I am very split. I just posted on climate change (Probing the cosmic ray climate link). And Jim Garrison is very pro climate change alarmism, and also very pro anti terror propaganda bullshit, and pro american empire, pro current form of globalism. That I want to vomit on Integral Leaders upside down orientation to global problems, where they are bringing positive idealistic orientation to globalism without knowing enough about the past century of elite globalism such that Integral Leadership is ignorant of how the climate alarmism was an agenda CREATED by the banking elite, such that the terrorist war was CREATED by the banking elite, such that the economic crisis was CREATED by the banking elite.
So this naivete that Integral Leadership currently sees the, current problems of humanity, are a result of our evolution, instead of the truth ( Need to be validated for yourself, start here Energy Solutions) that all these problems were CREATED and DESIGNED by the BANKING ELITE. Yes the Illuminati!! The elite using the evolutionary process for backwards intentions. If you study the history of the illuminati you will find something very ironic. The intention at first was very good and looks just like integral looks at its self today. A basic pattern of " We find the mass of people are not evolved enough to deal and work on the problems we face, so we the elite, will cuddle the masses and direct them into the light of reason or Orange" Teal for integral now. (A side note " The angel of the light of reason is lucifer"). So they started movements like the freemasons, secret academic societies, as a response to the dogma of traditional religions. Only to have the solutions they promoted lead to Eugenics, Centralized banking, Centralized media, Centralized control of education, etc. So what started as something with great intention morphed into a pattern that caused greater problems and evil intentions in the future. Well that future is here. And without knowing it Integral Leadership has ponied up to the pattern the banking elite want us to have. Climate fear, peak oil, population problem, anti terror legislation ( Which is a carbon copy of Nazi legislation), Global central bank and CURRENCY( Loss of national sovereignty), and the ID chip. All of which Integral Leadership has been deceived on, maybe not the chip yet. WHAT A HUGE MESS.
Now as far as solutions that do not fall into the trap of the illuminati, I have posted on alternative energy sources that are strong here Energy Solutions( wind, solar etc are weak). And posted an Integral Economic Solution ( that needs more attention from me, I hope soon).
Kitaigorodskii observed, “A first rate theory predicts, a second rate theory forbids and a third rate theory explains after the fact.
Wouldn't you listen to the person who predicted the economic crisis, climategate crisis, current middle east revolution.
As far as I know, I am the only one in these integral circles who predict these events in detail, years ahead of the actual event. And I have not been treated very well by posters here because of the radicalness of the ideas I have shared and my arrogance( I know I know, strange shadow). We are all in this together and I seem untrustworthy because I am way ahead of the curve to those who are way ahead of the curve ( which gives me some strange shadows(its tramatic in itself), but I am well experienced( think Jacob's Ladder)) And it is people like me who can solve these problems. And I have made solutions by integrating vast fields of knowledge, but that tricky issue of information replication and distribution and others integrative capacity have me in a current holding pattern. Please help me by reading my incomplete expression,( its very complete in my mind) in the Integral Economic Solution post and ask some questions so I can respond and make it digestable. So many problems are solved with it that I have not look at all the issues, others would have with it.
We have very powerful solutions to our current problems and we need the courage to question some very closely held beliefs. Beliefs that can be transformed, like in science; the second law of thermodynamics, like gravity is what formed suns and planets, that hydrogen is the lowest stable state of matter. Myths in society that can be transformed like, "that it is impossible for a few powerful elite to have control over every social institution, its to complex". In Self, "that your thoughts are your own, and that your mind is contained". In culture, "that we can survive in the future without everyone being able to live in dignity". Humanity is One, not as a goodwill statement , but as a verifiable truth.

Boiling Water
Posted September 1st, 2011 by Shannon McCarthyHi Corey!
Thanks for this timely post.
Speaking of hot water- today I'm canning tomatoes! The jars have to sit in boiling water for a while until the insides are hot enough to be sterilized.
I especially appreciate this last part:
You are asleep, and are having a dream. In that dream, millions of people are suffering needlessly. What is the best way to immediately liberate all of these people, to alleviate all of this pain?
Love that question.
One step could be reducing our personal contributions to the pain- even if we don't know how to solve it.

social innovators unite
Posted September 8th, 2011 by Andrew MacDonaldthanks Corey. I too think that our situation is unprecedented today. For that reason your emphasis on getting involved in the political process is misplaced. It makes the assumption that the power is where we used to think it was back when we had precedents.
I think we need to re-invent the political process, the governance process right at the level of the block, or the neighborhood. I have no grand plan for doing so, but ordinary people coming together and talking about their lives in a simple and real way, ultra locally. - they'll do stuff because they look someone in the eye and say "OK, I'll help you with that." Could this happen widely?
And imo we will come to this because the whole macro-society-global-economy is going to be so flat on its back that ordinary folks will have to pick up their shovels and get to work. They won't need integral theory; they'll need to be able to contribute meaningfully to their community. And they can. The challenge is to show them that they can by simple models.
Another way to approach this is to say . . . the government isn't running things, and nor are the banks, except by our agreement. Working together is where we make our agreement with each other.

Politics, and change
Posted September 8th, 2011 by stefano
Why are men and women unfree?
Wilber asks in Up From Eden, Chapter 19: Republicans, Democrats, and Mystics.
One locates the cause of unfreedom in objective forces, and the other locates it in subjective forces.
I'd never been interested in politics due to its cacophony of arguments; what's the point of listening to any of them? but right here, at the end of a book on spirituality and evolution -- the handling of which had opened my eyes -- Wilber turns to politics. Even politics can be made sense of. Oh my god.
... economically unfree because oppressed, psychologically unfree because repressed--and there is the first side of the Western answer.
For as long as there are separate selves, repression and oppression are necessary and inevitable, but surplus repression and surprise oppression are not.
So the fix is to kill oppression, and explode repression? No...
Does a person have access to Atman, to transcendence, to release from space, time, self, and mortality? If not, then the whole nightmare of repression and oppression swings necessarily into hellish action.
Make no mistake: every person intuits that he is God, but corrupts the intuition by applying it to his self, and he will then do whatever is necessary to confirm that distorted intuition in his own case. Through substitute seeking (Eros) and substitute sacrifices (Thanatos), he propels himself through the ocean of other equally driven souls, and the violent fiction of these overlapping Atman projects sparks that nightmare called history.
Glancing at this Sunday's date, in September 2011, those words echo with haunting poignancy.
Men and women want the world because they are in truth the world, and they want immortality because they are in fact immortal. But instead of transcending their boundaries in truth, they merely attempt to break and refashion them at will, and caught in this Atman project of trying to make the earth into a substitute heaven, not only do they destroy the only earth they have, they forfeit the only heaven they might otherwise embrace.

It is said that if you drop a frog in a pot of boiling water, it will jump out immediately and without hesitation, as any self-respecting amphibian would—but if you put it in a pot of cold water and slowly turn up the heat one degree at a time, the poor thing will eventually boil to death, fatally oblivious to the increasing threat its environment portends. Though somewhat macabre (no frogs were harmed in the making of this blog post), this analogy aptly conveys the condition of our current place in history, in which our entire world seems to be coming to a boil right before our eyes—a slowly culminating but inevitable transformation of history from one state to another. And we have, until recently, been largely oblivious to this—but now we are beginning to take notice, and like the frog who suddenly realizes that it's getting just a bit too warm for comfort, we are collectively faced with an existential ultimatum—either jump out of the pot, or boil alive.

don't like
Posted August 31st, 2011 by Ambo SunoHi, Corey - well argued, starting with the great frog parable and weaving a logic through the story.
Let me start with saying, "I don't like it." What's the it and what is the don't like?
I'm not clear on much of that, but I admit I feel bad when I read the weaving tread of apparent rationality, common sense, call to arms (and other organs), the attempted inspiration, the seeming goodness and rightness of what you say - and I admit that certainly there is a lot of personal reaction and defensiveness.
I have very little confidence or even known respect in what I am going to say. I think much is at a knee jerk, fear-based, don't-trust level. But I will say it (possible bad news), and maybe beyond the future chagrin I'll learn something (possible good news).
There feels like some logically questionable leaps that, when I'm in this frame of mind, seem like sleight of hand, as the argument is build towards action and inspiration. I think of the bible where so many different things have been said in total and when one goes to create a rationale for a perspective one marshals some from what he said and some from what another said. It's selective argumentation. For example, a case could be made, and apparently has been by various sages, that there is nothing to do, that doing from where most people are coming (ostensibly integral cognitively and morally, or not) can create further messes, as you mention about corn-based fuel, and more diffusely damaging. One might select and stitch together strong threads from ken, ramana m, aurobindo probably, certainly krishnamurti, that indicate doing nothing is best many times - frog in the pot or not. A part of this that I latch on to particularly is the fortified righteousness and way premature self-assuredness that gets mobilized - hand me the spoon, please, I'll do it myself.
I find myself between saying what I am saying and "beautifully said". Deepest is the resistance and doubt.
Damn, library is closing - no chance to equivocate or edit more before posting. Between my rock and my hard place. Break down city.
