An invitation to discuss Integral Cinema with Mark Allan Kaplan

You may have seen Mark Allan Kaplan's wonderful article about an Integral approach to cinema, recently published on Integral Post (you can find the article here.)  I myself was completely blown away by Mark's piece, as I thought it was a truly fascinating exploration of one of my all-time favorite ILP modules: the ENTERTAINMENT MODULE ^_^

Mark has offered to make himself available to answer any questions you guys might have about his article.  Because cinema is an art that touches almost all of our lives in very profound ways, I am sure you guys will have some really great questions and perspectives to share. So please, hop on over to the thread and fire away!

As a dear friend of mine often asks, "Where do you get your magic?  Where do you get your myths?"  The idea being that many of our integral brothers and sisters tend to forget the "include" part of "transcend and include," and fall into the trap of narrow high-mindedness that is too abstract and too disembodied and too divorced from the blood and guts of this world.  Conceptually, magic and myth are often dismissed by Integral thinkers as "lower" or "lesser"--but whether we know it or not, we scratch these magical and mythical itches in various ways, every single day.

Magic and myth are not to be eschewed from the Integral level, but are to be fully embraced as an ongoing source of meaning, inspiration, and cultural resonance.  For me, film is one of the greatest sources of myth and magic in my life, which is what made Mark's essay so spectacular in my eyes: not only does his approach help to locate and fully honor the full spectrum of cinema, from magic to mythic to rational to post-modern, but he also offers us a way to identify and discuss cinema that reaches beyond magic, myth, rationality, and post-modernism.

It is a truly groundbreaking article, and I would like to thank Mark and the guys at JITP for sharing it with Integral Post.  I look forward to seeing what you guys have to say!

Hey Thanks Corey

It's hard for me sometimes to remember that mythic is part of the spiral, as is magic, as a part of the spectrum of consciousness.  Sometimes I get angry with the "lower" and "lesser" vehicles of transmission of consciousness, but they are as much as part of me as anything higher and more profound.  Thank you for this reminder and I will try to be more inclusive of the "lower" and the "lesser".  Best to you!

Thanks Corey

I think that it is a good thing to maintain interest in cultural arts. Music was the primary evangelistic tool of the green level of development. Integral will only reach a very narrow part of humanity if all we are about is reading thick dusty old books. I think that it will take movies and music to reach the masses of humanity.

And thanks for putting our post about helping humanity through kiva.org in the featured spot. Ken said that for traction to occur we need to keep raising the question. I am confident that the compassionate heart of integral will eventually be ignited and that when this happens the forces of the good, beautiful, and true will have a powerful ally.

Hi

Although I work providing custom essay writing and the only thing I see almost everyday is nothing but a blank piece of paper, I still find time in continuing my hobby, and that is being a film/cinema connoisseur. And discussing it with other people is one of the activities I like doing.
