A Narrative on Guruji (by Ken Wilber)
Crossposted from KenWilber.com
Recently, I have been getting a lot of email asking me if I have, in fact, written several endorsements for the work of a spiritual teacher, Mr. Trivedi ("Guruji" to his friends and students), and if so, why?
The answer is yes (see the full essay below), and the reason is based entirely on direct, specific, scientific evidence. This evidence is so astonishing that I myself have never seen anything quite like it. Is Guruji "enlightened"? Well, you can meet him and decide that issue for yourself. What I am claiming—and supporting—is that Guruji's capacity to conduct and transmit universal spiritual energy (or "shakti") is utterly remarkable, as proven by scientific experiments themselves. It is these direct, specific, scientific experiments and their results that I am reporting, and on which I am basing my endorsement. This is a scientific conclusion, not a spiritual one (although, of course, you are free to make those as well—but I am reporting the direct science, which is indeed astonishing).
To put it briefly, Mr. Trivedi has an empirically demonstrated capacity to alter the atomic and molecular structure of phenomena simply through his conscious intentionality. The number of experiments done on this capacity (known in Sanskrit as shaktipat) that have been done in coordination with Mr. Trivedi is quite extraordinary—so far, over 5,000 empirical studies by universities and scientific research organizations all over the world (including the world renowned materials scientist Dr. Rustum Roy at the University of Pennsylvania). A very brief sampling of these experiments include:
Dr. Rustum Roy is a world renown scholar/researcher of impeccable credentials in materials science (at the University of Pennsylvania). Experiments in his laboratory showed, according to Dr. Roy, "Mr. Trivedi's capacity to alter the very structure of water molecules"—among other minerals and elemental molecules. Dr. Roy is now a very strong advocate of Guruji's shaktipat capacities—based, again, on direct experimental science—and has attended and helped coordinate several conferences showcasing Guruji's capacities.
- "Blessed" crops ("blessed" is the word Mr. Trivedi uses to indicate the action of his intentionality in consciousness to bring about the desired change in the blessed object) show yields up to an astonishing 500% higher than a field of the same (but unblessed) crops lying right next to it. Seeing photos of these fields is actually rather hard to believe. The blessed half of the field (in this case, a mango field) looks like the Amazon Rainforest, with lush green vegetation everywhere; the other half of the field (the unblessed half) looks straggly, thin, and pale.
- Likewise, blessed crops show almost 0% infection by harmful viruses and bacteria, compared to over 80% infection rates in the (unblessed) field next to them (just as astonishing, this is reversible: the "blessed" field can be "unblessed," resulting in major crop infections)
- in some cases, viral loads in mammals are reduced by up to 99.8% (including hepatitis b and c and cytomegalovirus)
- significantly altered bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics (including "superbugs")
- aspects of genus and species altered in bacteria
- in material sciences research, the mass and size of the atom, as well as the energy within and between atoms, was significantly altered by "blessing" activity
- Although the following results are only anecdotal, there have been over 50,000 reported cases of human healing. Although these are not scientifically determined, I mention them simply as an indication of possibilities. Scientific tests are now officially being conducted.
In any event, it is, as I said, simply and solely the results of these scientific experiments that have lead to my endorsement of Guruji's rather extraordinary capacity for shaktipat, or the transmission of a universal bioenergy with the capacity to alter material structure all the way to the atomic and molecular levels. Especially if you see photos of these results, you can't help but be struck by the rather intense capacity for this transmission demonstrated by Guruji. Most people receiving a blessing from Guruji can feel a direct and powerful jolt—if you get a chance, try it and see for yourself. But, to say it one last time, it is the direct results of scientific experiments upon which I base my endorsement, and I suggest you check out those results for yourself and see. They are truly quite remarkable.
A Narrative on Guruji
by Ken Wilber
This is a short account of what appears to be the emergence of a new form of Life Energy. This Energy is presently being transmitted by an individual affectionately known as Guruji, in a process he calls "blessing." The results of this transfer are rather remarkable, as demonstrated by empirical testing on items such as plant growth and human health.
My understanding of this Life Energy and the process of "blessing" is that, as many theorists have already noted, we seem to have entered a new evolutionary epoch on Earth and in humankind's history. There have been important major transformations in the past-including foraging (with an archaic worldview), horticultural (with a magic worldview), agrarian (with a mythic worldview), industrial (with a modern worldview), and informational (with a postmodern worldview).
Several of us have been predicting for some time that a significant new transformation is beginning on Earth at this time. Various psychological tests and sociological indications tend to show that there is the beginning emergence of a new type of consciousness. It's been referred to as integrative or integral or truly holistic. According to Integral Theory, every state or type of consciousness is accompanied by a specific type of energy (gross physical energy, subtle bioenergy, causal spiritual energy), and so the emergence of this new consciousness should be accompanied by a new degree of energy along that spectrum.
This is in accord with Guruji's own account. According to him, the Earth has entered a new Energy Field, which completely surrounds the earth and all its inhabitants, an Energy that is occurring at a significantly higher frequency than the previous Earth energy. All life forms on this planet are therefore, at this time, "out of sync" with this New Energy. Guruji's "blessing" transmission acts to recalibrate the individual (or plant or animal or whatever is blessed) with this New (and spiritual) Energy, and this results in numerous benefits, physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. In other words, it might be that the Energy that Guruji is working with is the energetic support or correlate of this new Integral transformation. And that's really pretty extraordinary. It's pretty amazing that that might be happening.
With blessings, many people report that they can literally feel an increase in the restructuring of the cells, an increase in energy, a kind of transformation of all of the human bodies-gross, subtle, causal—and these feel like, to me, that they are very much a correlate of this overall integral consciousness that is starting to emerge around the globe.
It is indeed a global situation-a new consciousness with a new and corresponding Life Energy. Having somebody who can directly transmit the corresponding energy of this transformation is pretty amazing . This would account for the fairly dramatic reports of people all over the world who have experienced this "blessing." It's shaktipat raised to a new evolutionary level.
I mentioned how I thought that this energy was newly emerging with this new stage of evolution. That it was a new evolutionary emergent in the past ten, fifteen, twenty years. And also that we seem to be seeing, in other dimensions of human beings, the emergence of more integral levels of consciousness and awareness. There are psychological tests for this and sociological tests for this, and right now there's only about four percent of the population that's moving into these integral areas, but that's starting to increase.
The point is that various psychological and sociological tests have verified the emergence of a new level of consciousness-again, one generally referred to as " integrative" or " integral." In other words, this is not just some hair-brained academic theory, but a reality disclosed by specific testing. What hasn't been disclosed is the new Life Energy that would be expected to underlie this new level of consciousness (what Integral Theory calls the Upper-Right quadrant aspect that would correlate with the newly emergent Upper-Left quadrant reality). But it is this new Integral energy that seems to be what Guruji is transmitting.
The results of empirical tests of this blessing are quite remarkable, and have so far been done on everything from mineral structures to microbes to agriculture to human health. In agriculture, for example, a blessed field of fruit shows up to 300% increased yield compared to a field next to it that is unblessed, and more astonishingly, the blessed field-without the use of any pesticides-is entirely free of bacterial or viral infection (versus close to 100% infection in the unblessed field). Similar results have come in for everything from the structure of bacteria to human illnesses. Clearly, this is all in the initial stages of testing and development, but the results so far are literally staggering (especially if you see photos of this for yourself).
So how should we view this phenomenon? Evolution itself is a process of creating greater and greater and greater unity. Thus, it starts out with quarks, which are then joined together into atoms, which are then joined together into molecules, which are then joined together into cells, which are then joined together into organisms-so that each step of evolution is an increase in a capacity for unity. The same thing happens in human growth and development, where individuals grow from egocentric stages of awareness ("me") to ethnocentric stages ("us") to worldcentric stages ("all of us"). And, as I mentioned, in the past ten or fifteen years there's been a new type of consciousness that has begun to emerge around the world. It's generally referred to as an integral consciousness, and it represents a further increase in unity and in the number of things that it can unify, the number of perspectives that it can take into account (reaching, by some tests, into a 5th-person perspective).
What we haven't seen is the corresponding energy that's driving this. My opinion is that the Life Energy, that is, the new degree of Life Energy that Guruji is transmitting, might very well be that energy. Of course, more testing needs to be done (and is being done at this time), but the initial results are very promising. And if so, one of the main things it's going to be able to do is not only recalibrate human energy to match this new level of energy that's starting to emerge around the earth, but also see this energy be able to create greater unities.
One of the unifications that will be most interesting in human beings seems to be the ability to unify the sub-conscious rear brain with the self-conscious fore brain . As Guruji explains it, the rear brain operates particularly during the first six years of life, and then during the next six years, up to age twelve, the fore brain increasingly takes over. But these can, and often are, out of sync. And no amount of medication, and no amount of meditation, and no amount of faith-healing can unify these two, can get them in sync, according to Guruji. Except, according to Guruji, blessing-or a direct infusion of this New Life energy into the organism.
If so, I think that's a really important example of the increasing unity that might be coming our way with this new turn in evolution. Because having the subcomponents of the brain out of sync is directly or indirectly responsible for most of humanity's problems. From Plato to modern psychotherapy, the conclusion is the same: humanity on the whole suffers from an interior civil war, with its lower and higher natures constantly at battle. So we're not going to have a truly unified humanity until we have a unified brain system, and then until the human organism itself is in sync with this new evolutionary Earth Energy. Guruji constantly explains that what he's doing is recalibrating the individual organism to this new planet-wide Energy that has emerged, and that human beings so far are not in unity with.
Once the individual has become in touch with this new level of bioenergy, that Energy acts, according to Guruji, as a new blueprint for the entire body, and it begins the recalibration and re-organization of virtually every fragmentation and dysfunction found in the system. If so, then this new evolutionary Energy indeed brings a new unity and coherence to everything it touches, gross, subtle, or causal, thus bringing the organism into alignment for this new transformation and evolutionary unfolding.
So I think that's one way of viewing this phenomenon, and the results that are occurring in its wake. A new and higher level of consciousness (integrally and spiritually driven) is beginning to emerge, and it is driven and supported by a new and higher level of bioenergy (subtle/ causal). One of the main ways humans can contact this new Energy is through a transmission from someone who is already in touch with this Energy, and this is something that Guruji's "blessings" are an example of. Once in touch with this new evolutionary Energy, the structure of the organism itself is profoundly reorganized to be in harmony with this Energy, and thus in health and harmony with itself.
This doesn't mean that this new Energy is for everyone. Guruji constantly repeats that there is just a relatively small percentage of humans that are ready for and open to it. In developmental terms, individuals must grow and develop through the first 5 major levels of transformation before they are ready for the newly emergent 6th level, to speak generally. According to psychological testing, this is presently less than 10% of the world's population, but that percentage is increasing, and can be expected to increase even more when and if this new Energy is increasingly made available.
Guruji says that individuals have to be open for this, and I think that's exactly right. You can't force people to be free. It's a choice they have to make, if they have evolved enough. Not even God can force a human to be free. That would just defeat the whole purpose. So whatever percentage of people are actually open to this-ten percent, twenty percent, fifty percent, whatever-we'll find out. But if there is a really strong doubt and negativity, then it doesn't surprise me that this transmission doesn't have a chance. So right now we're waiting to see the percentage of people that can become open to this type of transmission.
One of the important things to increase acceptance of this transmission is the type of hard scientific research and experiments that Guruji is doing - on mineral structure, microbes, plants, human illness. Because he's quite right, the God of the modem West is science. And if we can prove the structural power of this new Energy using science then that's going to help erase a lot of the doubt and negativity that is just inherently there. Most people just don't believe this kind of thing can happen - most people are even unaware of the existence of bioenergy, even though the contemplative traditions have been pointing to it for millennia. So I think this is exactly the right course to take, in order to get this new evolutionary development available to as many people as are ready to receive it.
So, that's kind of a short summary of how I would see this New Energy, and how it fits with evolution, and its basic job of increasing unity and resonance on the planet-a new and higher blueprint. Whether or not it finds a welcome home, we shall certainly have to wait and see.
In short, it's possible that this blueprint is the blueprint of this new worldwide Divine life energy. So it's not just Guruji's ideas. He's just the conduit; he's just the connection between this literally Divine Life Force, in its new emergence, in its new evolutionary form. And like I said, several major human transformations have occurred four or five times in the past, going from foraging to horticulture to agrarian to industrial to informational. I believe there is a subtle energetic shift with each of those and I believe that this is possibly the next shift, and it's the next form of Spirit's own unfolding, of Spirit's own energy. And for whatever reason, that I don't think even Guruji understands, he got tapped on the shoulder to be a main conduit for this. In all ages past it's gotten transferred to human beings one way or another, and blessing appears to be one of the main ways that this new blueprint is being transmitted to those that are open for it. Again, much awaits more testing, but so far, this is incredibly promising. So stay tuned!

thanks
Posted June 21st, 2010 by David MarshallThank you, Corey. Very interesting and intriguing stuff.
I've been thinking that if many modern, scientific empirical facts are just kosmic habits (or evolutionary givens rather than involutionary givens) then something like this would be possible; there would be a way to undo some habits and re-create things in some way. But I would think that that re-creation would be done in a pretty nondoing sort of way; that is, I don't imagine that Guruji is telling things to change in a particular way. Actually, after listening to a number of videos I now recall him saying something to that effect, that his blessing is more open ended than that, having to do with a general kind of happiness.

Exciting Research!
Posted June 22nd, 2010 by Mary Linda LandauerI just recently listened to a teleseminar where a power point presentation of this amazing research was presented before Guruji spoke. The research yields more than 5000 studies of his ability to consistently, through energy transmissions, or as he simply refers to them as blessings, that have an ability to increase or decrease the size of atoms. Through this gift, as he states, a very powerful Universal Energy transmits making these incredible alterations at the very level of the DNA.....Viewing these photos it is at once evidenced something extraordinary is happening.
Mahendra Kumar Trivedi told his story and listening to him I was moved deeply by his own reverence to his gift. He feels strongly that we need to give scientific verification to this power. He is also quick to state this is humanity's potential, and his actualization of this powerful Universal Energy, is to open the door into the light and arena of Science. This is not some New Age hype. He deeply feels this level of powerful energy could change the face of the planet for future generations.
Now for those who feel Ken is backtracking lets look at this for just a moment from the perspective that everything is energy......from gross to subtle to causal to non-dual and absolute.....Ken has many many times stated that higher states of consciousness, which are impermanent, can over time become stablized into more permanent stages or structures of consciousness....thru the on going practice of contemplation, meditation, and nonordinary states. It takes about five years for one to move these higher energy states into a more permanent actualized structure. What are these higher states? I do believe they are a more highly refined energy. Most of the great Masters, Jesus being one of them, used these higher powerful energies for healing. Changing the very molecular structure of the person healed.....And, many of us have read of these great masters who understood these higher energies but very rarely shared them with the less realized. Until the student was ready to be shown these gifts; demonstrating their advanced development in the higher structures because these great teachers understood these powers could be abused......And this is exactly what Guruji says. This energy is so powerful that it can transform bacteria into a different species.....
This power has the ability to unify the brain structure. And, most of humanity's struggle to transform is due to the lower sub-conscious brain.....So this is really exciting research and why I see not only Ken, but many others, wanting to better understand these higher energies and how we might just learn to change the course of our planet through them.....Ken is excited about the research he has seen already yielded from this tranmission of energy or blessings. We should all be so excited. To understand the Core Theory and have the map to go into the territory is the first step of our journey. Now we are seeing some results of this experience throught the refined energies starting to change our very molecular structure, moving us into higher levels of our humanity. This is how we begin to unify, I believe. This is why I'm so excited about this research.
Much love to you all,
Mary Linda

Going to check it out.
Posted June 22nd, 2010 by Justin RobinsonYesterday I read about this and felt that I needed to go see Guruji. It was as if I could not stop myself from searching for flights, entering my credit card number, booking the hotel. There is something within me that has to know.
So I'm booked for San Diego at the end of July to check it out. This really messes with my head though. It is not the idea of bioenergetic fields, which I find entirely credible, nor the probability that we can influence them consciously, nor the possibility that some people might excel at this which could result in some rather unique and extraordinary outcomes. All of these are at least within the realm of explanation. What I find cognitively heavy and difficult to overcome is the packaging: the $100 remote pet blessings and vials of holy water. These echo of my fascination with Peter Popoff and Tommy Birchfield and the other greasy evangelists as a child, who mesmerize the broken and sell them something very ephemeral, sometimes outright lies. And lies, when peddled in the tents of the evangelists, are not cheap.
And yet I have to know.
I hope to return to Calgary with more questions about post-metaphysical possibilities than about Ken Wilber and weather or not he's still on. Either way, I do like having my world turned upside down. ;-)

Endorsement versus Speculation
Posted June 23rd, 2010 by Brian TurkNormal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4
Please keep in mind that Ken states very clearly at the beginning of his article that his endorsement of Guruji is based solely upon and limited to the scope of the results of specific empirical scientific studies that he deems credible. What's wrong with optimistic speculation?
My opinion of Ken’s credibility wouldn’t suffer the lest bit even if Guruji turned out to be some kind of anti-christ.

Confession of an Integral Secularist
Posted June 23rd, 2010 by Jim LeeIndeed, I was quite surprised by this article, as it is the first time that I've seen Wilber supporting what could be seen as just another NEW-AGE guru performing magic. The reason I was first attracted to Wilber's philosophy was the relative lack of unprovable metaphysics (in the Popper sense) and the more sane discussion of contemplation, meditation, and the possibility of classical enlightenment as sustained awareness in deep dreamless sleep.
I, myself, tend to think as a secular humanist. I am sympathetic with Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris. From my perspective, we need both militant atheists and framers--framers in this case, means the "framing" of a language as to tease, lure, and gently orient a behavior. Examples would be what George Lakoff often refer to as the framing of language by the conservatives such as "tax relief," "partial-birth abortion." When a progressive personality argues against "tax relief," and supporting instead more social programs, the argument is already framed to go against the progressive argument because "relief" in this case means unburdening of suffering.
Another example could be the disparity of percentage of consent organ donors in European countries. In some of the countries, the question is framed as, "Check this box if you DO wish to be an organ donor." And majority of the people do not become organ donors in those countries. In some of the other countries, the question is framed as, "Check this box, and we will remove you from the list of potential organ donors." And most people do not check the box, and they become organ donors.
Ok that was little bit of excursion, I was simply trying to show that I think we need both the militant style like that of Sam Harris, and the framing style.
An Integrally-informed Secularist
Although I am mostly secular, I am open to phenomena that current science is not yet aware of. Indeed, I as a secularist experience a little bit of cognitive dissonance when it comes to bioenergy. Western science, unlike Chinese medicine, tends to be dismissive of bioenergy and its purported effects. In the regards of god-like power of bioenergy, indeed, I myself am quite wary of. I do not readily believe that bioenergy can cure cancer, AIDS, and whatnot. Although I would be very happy if it were able to since I, myself as a secularist, do have conscious control over Kundalini, or Qi energy.
However, there's a problem with terminology--its signifier and its supposed referent. Bioenergy to some , maybe have the signified that is an all pervasive energy that is in plants, bacteria or even earth itself. But to me, its signified simply means that activated energy that traverses along the channels of nervous system that most scientists, who often are not introspective with regards to their own bodymind, are mostly unaware of.
Depending on the terminology, I am assuming bioenergy or orgone, is exchangeable with the term Kundalini--the energy that rises up the spine that is often highly pleasurable. Overtime, however if the individual practices, the energy can be directed, voluntarily, downward and upward the spine. and with practice, extend from top of cranium to the sole of the feet.
I have observed that progression of voluntary control of bioenergy in my own learning. At first I was NOT able to direct Kundalini down the spine, and only up the spine. And Kundalini was limited to the spine range, and never beneath groins. Now, I am able to direct Qi directly down the thighs, and sometimes, when the energy is strong enough, it penetrates to the ankles. Currently, I've been trying to penetrate bioenergy to the arms, and have largely been unsuccessful. (I've tried to look up readings on this--to find tips to help me achieve Kundalini penetrating the arms and fingers. unfortunately, most of the readings are plagued with metaphysical imagination and miraculous powers. In contrast, I do not assume ESP kind of power from this energy, to me, it's simply an intra-sensory reality that largely has escaped attention of Modern science. )
I was very impressed with Ken's video showing him with the EEG machine and voluntarily controlling the different mental states. I would thus call for a similar treatment for the Guruji Effect. And even in the mental states that indeed purports his claims in his earlier writings that he is able to sustain awareness even in deep dreamless sleep. This has inspired me to abandon all the previous associations I've had with the term "spiritual Englightenment," (and its perfectionist, and end-of-journey, superhuman in all facets connotations)
I wrote the above passages to show that I am not a typical secularist. I experience lucid dreams, have conscious control over kundalini, and sometimes experience clairvoyant like states. But I am still not sure about the hard science validity of the blessing claim.
I am well-read in quantum mechanics, string theory, general relativity... I've seen videos of savants performing mind-gobbling calculations, mnemonic feats, synaesthesia...and I do attest to the claim that "The world is not stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we CAN imagine." I am open to the idea of the blessed water, but I've also seen too many debunking of supernatural feats by people such as James Randi.
(James Randi is a skeptic magician who can perform all the same feats that ESPers claim to do. The only difference is that Randi tells you at the end that what he did did not violate the known laws of physics. Randi has offered a prize to anybody who can prove a extra-ordinary phenomenon--it is subject to repeatability, verification, falsifiablity, etc.)
(And yes, I have read the experiment about the chicken imprinting on a randomly walking robot. That to me, is a repeatable type of science, and thus justifiably can be called hard science. If I have the tools, I would really like to do the experiment myself. "something is dong we don't know what!" and that is exactly right.)
Back the the article
The claim here is that Guruji's blessing can alter the very structure of the water molecule itself and hence make the crops virus/insect free. This goes against my intuition. As I would more readily accept the claim if the study found both samples of crops to be under the same vermin-free environment, but the blessed crops have higher growth rates. I still believe that Western science and technology are very effective when it comes to diseases of viral/bacterial agents. Where as the umbrella term holistic science, barring charlatanism and placebo effect, are very better with regards to the relative lack of side-effects when it comes to psychosomatic diseases. Integral medicine, with its precision targeting of the 4-quadrant causes of the disease, seeks to address source of the problem as beyond the conventional treatment. The last thing that I want integral community to swing toward is a claim that Shaktipat can cure Hepatitis, AIDS, malaria and other agential diseases. (However I am open to claim of the curing of psychosomatic diseases such as migraine, and possibily allergies, autoimmune diseases)
I would like to see Guruji submit an application for the Randi price. As this, if proven, would indeed earn his foundation a million dollars and a new branch of science.
The first healthy response to such a claim, even if by a personally respected author, is to be an open-minded skeptic.
I would like to see more links and videos. I would like to see actual data of longitudinal studies of the crops and the people that Guruji blessed.

Framing and Concerns for a Literalized Integral
Posted June 23rd, 2010 by Jim LeeThe following is a response to a fellow poster, since I have taken an hour to write it, I thought it would be better to post it in a more visible place. I am currently investigating the sources of the Guruji phenomenon, and have yet to conclude its scientific validity. However, I confess to be a contemplative secularist and I am increasingly alarmed by the deviation of the post-metaphysical project of the integral community. (I understand from a business point of view to attract membership) The article above mentions altering of atoms. The question I have is, how do they know that? Is atom in the evidence shaped like a ball? But that is "ball-shaped atoms and molecules" you see in chemistry rooms are simply models and not actual atoms. Or are they more like Electronic clouds as Quantum mechanics would tell us? Where the most of the atom is empty, and distance between electron and the nucleus would be like the distance between Earth and our Sun. How in the world is the atom altered? Enlighten me. Did the research involve extra-powerful electronic microscope? Did they know the altering through indirect experiments? What's the science?
I've read the forewards of Ken Wilber lavishly praising Adi Da, whom he later had reservations, and described the Adi Da case as a Line/Level fallacy. In this article above, I am seeing the same lavish praise. Rightly so, any individual should who read both pieces should be at first, a skeptic
The first part of the response deals with a poster's question whether framing is only done by conservatives, and 2nd deals with my general concern about the direction of Integral as prompted by Wilber's support of Guruji's claim. I have seen forum threads in Integral Life supporting 2012 doomsday prediction. Now I am having a cognitive dissonance. I have always identified myself as integral. Proud of my knowledge of such cutting-edge ideas. But if a believer in 2012 describes himself as integral, and I do not believe in 2012, then what exactly does it mean to be integral these days? With that I invite you all to reflect. And in the meanwhile seriously research the Guruji claim. In time it should be subject to the verification by the most close-minded skeptics, such as James Randi, Michael Shermer(editor of skeptic magazine).
Again, I hope my concern is not dismissed as a case of scientism. As I described above in the previous post, I experience conscious Kundalini (except I cannot penetrate kundalini to the arms). I invite you all to post more links to prove me wrong. In fact, I want to be wrong about my belief regarding extraordinary effects of kundalini.
Question from poster:
Is framing only done by conservatives?
It's done by conservatives and liberals alike. It was simply the example that came to my mind. Liberal framing can include the switch of "global warming" to "climate change." As global warming was seen as a Leftist issue, repetition of the word "global warming" was not helping the cause. (since when it's winter, it sure ain't getting hot. )
Other conservative framing include: (I will simply paste here:)
"In one recent memo, titled ''The 14 Words Never to Use,'' Luntz urged conservatives to restrict themselves to phrases from what he calls, grandly, the ''New American Lexicon.'' Thus, a smart Republican, in Luntz's view, never advocates ''drilling for oil''; he prefers ''exploring for energy.'' He should never criticize the ''government,'' which cleans our streets and pays our firemen; he should attack ''Washington,'' with its ceaseless thirst for taxes and regulations. ''We should never use the word outsourcing,'' Luntz wrote, ''because we will then be asked to defend or end the practice of allowing companies to ship American jobs overseas.'' (source: http://www.chelseagreen.com/bookstore/item/dont_think_of_an_elephant:paperback/new_york_times_article)
Other progressive framing was a term introduced by Lakoff regarding how conservative members in California state legislatures were able to thwart some progressive measures. Lakoff wanted to frame this political phenomenon as "minority rules." The logic of the framing would fall along the lines of--What determines legislature in a democracy is majority rules. However due to the supermajority, or 66%, requirement to pass some bills in California, it allows the minority party to hold the gate. In summary, supermajority, which is often acceptable to most people when it comes to important measures, is framed as "minority rules", or anti-democratic, which is not acceptable to most people.
This phenomenon is well-known to the Nobel Prize winner Kahneman. Kahneman was a psychologist who won the Economics prize. He demonstrated irrational behavior in economic decision making, and hence challenges the dominant position of the Dismal Science--That when it comes to an economic decision, most human beings are rational, and have an enlightened self-interest. And because most human beings are rational, even though there can be special cases of irrationality, the market, through the invisible hand, will be rational price-setters for goods.
Kahneman demonstrated, through numerous experiments, why people are not rational, and as Lakoff would add, often not even conscious. 98% of the waking life is not conscious(in the self-reflective sense.).(and my own subjective experience seems to confirm the claim. ) Experiments were done where a control and experiment group were asked to rate the price of an ordinary coffee mug. In the control, before the price evaluation, the subject is shown an ordinary, relatively neutral movie clip. Where as in the experiment group, the subjects are shown with a sad, sentimental video. What we find is that the experiment group tended to appraise the coffee mug(and other items) at a higher price range than the control group! When the subjects are asked whether the movie affected their decision making, the typical answer is "NO." There are many poignant experiments, due to time and energy constraint (I am getting a little tired from typing) I will not mention here, I will give you a few links for some readings.
Back to the framing example about supermajority vs. minority rules. Kahneman wrote about how patients, when facing a critical surgery operation, chose different things depending on how the risk of the operation is framed. If the operation is described as having 10% chance of failure, more patients will refuse the operation than if it's framed as 90% of success! Notice how both claims entail the same fact, but to the perception of the patient, IT IS NOT! There are so many examples of this, I only wish Wilber would talk about them! (stop repeating the same content ><)
A picture is worth a thousand words, a documentary is worth ten thousand, Here's a good link for you if you are interested in framing:

Idk how much you are aware of the Integral's involvement in framing. Although Integral community did not call it framing, the changing of language suited to a particular audience is essential the same idea. For example, in one of Wilber's dialogue with Hunter Lovins, Ken mentioned the changing of environmentalist language according to the audience. Because a religious audience, or a mythic-membership audience, would not resonate with the language of "Mother Nature being raped by humanity. Or humanity is like cancer conquering the womb of the Mother Goddess." This type of language is OK with a lot of students in progressive university, it is OK with some "tree-hugging"(in a positive sense) environmentalist. But "Mother Nature," to a monotheist religion, in our case, Christianity, is an immediate turn off. In fact, Mother Nature is like Santa Claus to a lot adult Christians, it's a myth, a human construct, and a heresy to His Almighty.
So when an environmentalist wants to accomplish something, and he has to garner the support of secular/religious group alike, he can change the language of his communication without compromising his principles. He would instead, talk about "stewardship of the earth." About protecting the family through the means of environmentalism...about national security through development of alternative energy. These are language that resonate with a blue audience. And by no means is it lying, manipulation or pandering.
I am currently studying in a university, and I am aware of all the anti-capitalist, anti-Christian, anti-corporate atmosphere of the university. And that in my opinion, can really need some guiding wisdom from the integral community. About the distinction between ideal and the means to reach the ideal. There's so much ideal in the University, and so energetic, but so much of it is wrongly channeled to its own special kind of hatred.
Integral community, in turn, needs to be aware of the problems with the coding of a system. I deliberately avoided using green to describe the academic culture, or "blue" to describe the religious. The world is so much more complex than that.
General Concern for the Direction of Integral
This is a little bit of excursion, but I want to take the chance to express some of my concerns for the development of integral. When I first encountered it, I was so enthusiastic that I have found my community of like-minded individuals. Then I proceeded to read all of Wilber's books, and I vowed I would contribute to the Integral community through my own authoring of books.
But as the years went by, I have gradually fallen out. Not because I have come to disagree with the basic premise of integral or its ideas, but because of the following
1)from what seems to me a deviation from the Post-metaphysics project of Wilber-V. The frequent mentioning of the word "Spirit" with capital "S" with no context as to what it means. The catering to a less skeptic community due to the sheer demographics of audience that could be interested in "expansion and elevation of human consciousness."
2)the lack of concrete examples in the audio dialogues. I'm sure this is a common complaint amongst people who have been familiar with Integral for a long time. There is a constant repetition of content. I understand Wilber needs to introduce ideas to new audiences, but those repetition of ideas should be bolstered with concrete examples, such as the ones I provided above regarding framing. At first the integral corpus was intellectual overwhelming--so many perspectives, so many disciplines, and so many new words! Now I am underwhelmed. Now it is often redundant, and vague with basic theories but with no real examples. It would be much more intellectually stimulating if Wilber talked about the example about organ donation, the imprinted chickling and the randomly-walking-robot...
3)integral vs. not integral, and the color-talk. Initially I thought it was fine, since it's useful as a shorthand to introduce the concepts. In order to establish itself as a genuine wave of culture, it needs to critique its previous wave, so as to distance itself--so that people would not think Integral is same as Pluralistic, but better. (just as the postmodern would always do to Modernity in their calls for a post-Enlightenment project) Since my first threading in the forums of IntegralNaked, I've seen, on the forum, individuals accusing each other of NOT-BEING-INTEGRAL. The accusations takes shape like the following: "Are you sure you have made the momentous leap into 2nd tier yet? From what you have written so far, I am sure you are a GREEN." You get the idea, I'm sure you encounter this in your own forum browsing and the monkey-mind.
As integral community expands, there are bound to be what I call "dispersal effect." Individuals taking liberties with the color-talk, and not previously informed by the "probability-wave" metaphor of the stages, not aware of the past history of labeling such as demonstrated through the Rosenhan pseudopatient experiment. Initially, in a relatively small community scattered around the globe, the ideas were used as a short-hand with the assumption that people will take them lightly, however as the ideas spread, the language becomes "reified," increasingly "literalized..."
This dispersal effect of ideas and the consequent distortion should be a concern for the integral community. And although I still believe that Integral movement will have far more benefits than side-effects, but we should leave the integral cultural inheritance, like the metaphor Kosmic groove, as healthy as we can.

Emoto's Water crystals
Posted June 23rd, 2010 by Jim LeeOk for those of you who are familiar with Emoto's photographs of water crystals, here's a evaluative article that I found:
http://www.is-masaru-emoto-for-real.com/
Again, the point is not that people should not encourage more positive emotions, thoughts. Water molecule might not be able to register it, but human brains certainly can. But Emoto crosses the line when he champions sale of "Indigo Water" with beatiful, symmetrical crystal that can seep through your cells with ease and change the genetic structure for the better...all for just 35 dollars a bottle.
I just went to Trivedi's website, and I have doubts about it, as it was not obvious whether the photographs of the different plants were performed in a triple-blind experiment.
http://www.trivedifoundation.org/faq
Nothing about the scientific method they were using. Again, if the Trivedi effect is just hyper-strong kundalini, which is quite possible, I am open to the idea as I experience kundalini myself. But how in the world is kundalini transmitted through air? Size of the atoms is expanded? What in the world does that mean? Now that there's speculation about superstrings, will there be claims that Superstrings are stretched like an esltatic band?
Kundalini, at this moment's speculation, is probably excitement along the neural pathways--which is why you experience spontaneous kundalini when hearing climax in a musical piece, or taking a shower after a stressed day while taking deep breaths.
Upon a close reading of Wilber's endorsement, I am sincerely disappointed at the language. I am still an integralist at heart--integra, in this case, meaning trying to unify epistemological spaces--body mind and spirit in self culture and nature. But this sort of "new type of energy emerging on the planet" language was deeply disappointing for one of my most respected author.
I am worried, I am worried where Integral is going. Please assuage my worry. Will I once again find myself an ideological nomad?

Reflections
Posted June 25th, 2010 by StanleyThere seems to be quite a charge regarding Ken’s post above. It seems that our reactions could be in some of the categories below:
1. I don’t believe that Mr. Trivedi can bless beings in positive ways. I suspect that some of the people in this group do not understand how he could do this and would be against anything their rational brain could not understand even if it was real and helpful.
2. I believe that everyone specifically including me could do what he does.
3. I am open to the possibility that he might be able to do something that is very rare, special, and helpful.
4. I can attest by my personal experience with him that he did not bless me.
5. I can attest by my personal experience with him that he did bless me.
I would especially like to hear from people who could speak from their personal experience with him.

Source material...
Posted June 27th, 2010 by Simon SenzonHi Everyone,
What a wonderful discussion Ken has gotten started here.
I recommend Swanson's new book, Life Force (www.synchronizeduniverse.com). In the book he has about ten pages about the Trivedi experiments (540-552). There is even a section on Trivedi's physiology. It seems that his pituitary is "seven times larger than normal," among other anomalies. I wonder if the increased magnetic properties of his pituitary have something to do with his ability to work with the subtle fields...
I look forward to exploring this further.
All my best,
Simon--

Sounds like Deeksha
Posted June 28th, 2010 by Mark SchindlerI will have to join the ranks of the open minded skeptics on this one. How is this any different from Deeksha, the oneness blessing that is most closely associated with Sri AmmaBhagavan at Oneness University in India? www.onenessuniversity.org. There they claim that, for a price, you can learn how to do what Mr. Trivedi seems to be doing. I don't see the kind of scientific rigor that would validate the claims being made here.

Rallying Integral Secularists
Posted June 28th, 2010 by Jim LeeKeith --
I too have trouble with some of the directions that our content goes. I'm deeply ambivalent about some of the more New Age sounding material that we work with. On the one hand, I don't personally find a lot of credence in some of it because so much of what passes as data validity falls prey to one of many well-known statistical fallacies. Humans are absolutely atrocious at rigorously inferring meaning from data. (A la climate change, on both sides...)
On the other hand, I feel a responsibility for allowing our audience to judge for themselves what are in most cases highly-credible guests and researchers that we feature, and this instinct is only the greater when the material causes me a second thought. I have a built-in anti-censor as long as the guest's worldview is not itself prone to magical delusion. (Not always an easy judgment, mind you.)
I can't speak for Ken but I know him to be extremely rigorous in his view of data and empirical methodology. I suppose that one of the job hazards of our endeavor, which includes integral media that strives to take a post-metaphysical and methodologically-pluralistic view of phenomena, is that by examining as object some of the topics that have been badly and magically mythologized by regressive New Age tendencies is that we will get hit by some shrapnel.
What I can promise you is that we are not engaging in New Age regression ourselves. We have a huge filter around the problems that arise from unsupportable claims and from the over-focus on the subjective quadrant. This is in part why we actively try to present growth media and insights from every quadrant, from economics and climate change to personal practice, relationships and meditation and more. We try to cover the full range of human experience.
What I will ask is that while you rightfully and fully engage your analytical process on any media we produce that deals with objective claims, that you also consider your own first-person account of how that is coloring your experience. I think the trick here, as someone once noted, is to be just open-minded enough such that our brains don't fall out.
Thanks for the great feedback.
Warmly,
Robb Smith
(Smith's quote from : http://integrallife.com/member/keith-orndoff/blog/i-am-feeling-increasingly-estranged-integral-theory)
I was glad to see Robb Smith has similar worry that many of us empiricists do. The reason why some of us empiricists are in the integral camp is because we ARE aware of the scientism aspect of Science, and the many important phenomena that mainstream science/academia simply dismiss away.
Like Keith, I felt estranged from Integral more and more. What in the world is going on? Why is there so much repetition of content? Why are so many concepts literalized?
Question to Integral-Life, I-I, IntegralNaked staff--
Is this direction toward more "New-Age" content a reflection of demographics? I understand empiricist integralism will always likely to be a minority in a topic borders around spirituality. Is there any expressed intention to urge this less-skeptical demographic to critically examine post-metaphysics and cognitive biases? In other words, will the Integral staff acknowledge this demographic reality, turn it into a kind of social experiment, a Great Conveyer belt?
Here's a blog that I created(i fleshed out the messiness of the above posts): I am hoping to rally more "vocal" concerns from critical-thinking empiricists about the direction of I-I. As noted by Google Search pointed out by an article in Integral World: search interest for Ken Wilber has dropped precipitously. It's time for exploration of ideology, engagement with academic disciplines, and meta-integral studies.

something must come after informational
Posted June 29th, 2010 by Isaac HolzeMost of the latest discussion has been centered around Integral Life's current state or whether this is a dip into New Age nonsense, but what about the substance of the argument here? If we have modernity with its Industrial shift, and post-modernity with its Informational shift, surely an integral age must be accompanied by something new, something never seen before, something emergent? It does not seem too far off that a new form of Life Energy would be just that new transformation.
I believe that Ken does not take his brand (the official Ken Wilber output, including Integral Life) lightly, so I read this with great trust and openness. After researching it further, I signed up for a remote blessing, something I am glad to put money towards. How many would not buy a computer, or a factory for their product, or a plow, or a hoe, or greater hunting equipment?

My experience (so far) with a remote blessing from Trivedi
Posted July 7th, 2010 by Brian TurnerAfter reading Ken's blog I decided to experience the "Trivedi effect" for myself. I figured the worst that could happen is that I'd have a little less money to spend on the stuff that Bill Harris hawks.
I'm a practicing physicist, and my native perspective is highly 3rd person. That said, it is impossible for this report to be scientific. I don't know of a way to fully characterize gross/subtle/causal body/mind/spirit either prior to or after the blessing, nor do I know how to eliminate the effects of life living me in the intervening time. Additionally, note Ken's point about needing to be at 5th stage before being nudged to the 6th, or in my own odd vernacular "You can't make apple pie from apple blossoms." So, with all those disclaimers out of the way, here is my subjective experience with the remote blessing:
At the scheduled time of the blessing (June 30): I felt a very warm sensation in and around my spine at heart level and I felt "itching" on my forehead.
On July1, I still felt residual "tingles" in my back at heart level and "itchy tingles" in the forehead.
On July 1 and 2, I slept extraordinarly well. Best sleep in at least a decade.
On July 4th, I had 8 hour bout of nausea and vomitting, headaches, and muscular aches.
On July 5-7, I have experienced sharp pains in the muscles around the left hip joint. Coincident with the pain, I've noticed a small realignment in my walking gait. (Before, when I stepped with my left leg, I led with the inside of my knee. Now I am leading with the kneecap. I'd guess this amounts to a 7 degree rotation in the way the leg "swings" from the hip socket while walking.)
I could find plausible explanations for the nausea and aches and pains, but cannot think of a plausible explanation for the sensations the night of the blessing or the shift in alignment in my leg.
All in all, I am somewhat excited in what is happening. I'll wait a few weeks to see if/how the hip pain resolves. But at this point I would be willing to try the experiment again.

4th, 5th person Perspective.
Posted July 7th, 2010 by Jim Lee
@Brian Turner
Thank you for your post.
It would be certainly a fascinating new world for me if Trivedi effect is indeed for real. It would be like the day I discovered Human Potential Movement, voluntary Kundalini, savants, Special Relativity, Superstring, and a million other implausibly magical and existentially real things.
If you, or any other person, can do a video blog of the remote blessing, that would be fantastic. That would really help all of us 3rd person oriented individuals to see what's happening. After all, 3rd persons framed with the fabric of time, is in a sense a 4th person/5th person perspective.
And there's also a rather confusing/advanced dialogue between Wilber and Edwards regarding the difference between 3p, 4p, 5p perspectives and 3-p, 4-p, 5-p perspectives.
btw. I take 4th person to mean--pluralistic wave, 5th person to mean a perspective that sees the deep structure similarity amongst the pluralistic truths of the 4th person. Different ppl use them differently, so we should flesh out the terminology.
Ken Wilber did talk about what it means to be 6th, 7th person briefly in one of the audio clips in Integral Spirituality. I have to dig it up. But he basically said--6th person means the grasping of connection of all gross-waking phenomenon in a kind of sudden vision(which he then qualified as not even "vision" in the mind's eye's vision sense). 7th person would be the grasping of all phenomenon in Gross-waking, Subtle-dreaming, Causal-deep sleep states.
That is indeed quite fascinating, because even though I am a lucid dreamer, 6th and 7th persons description are a little over my head. I delightfully acknowledge my ignorance here. But 5th and 4th persons do make sense if you add the dimension of time/development, as well as pluralistic surface truths.

And of course, here's another problem with homeopathy--how diluted is the drug? if the Drug is diluted so that 50% is still in the homeopathic drug, then I don't see why not it would not be effective. )

Blessings
Posted June 21st, 2010 by StanleyKen presented information to the effect that Mr. Trivedi has the ability to bless beings with shaktipat. If this is so I believe that this is a gift of extremely great value. It is my understanding that the ability to bestow shaktipat has existed in very rare individuals in the areas in and around India for thousands of years. This blessing was usually reserved only for a few of a guru’s most developed students.
I believe that it was the intention of Jesus to make this blessing more widely available and that his early disciples had the ability to bestow this gift. As the years rolled on and thought and theology became more important in the church this power seems to have become less available.
I can attest that Swami Muktananda had the power to bless many people with shaktipat and believe that much good came from these blessings. I would have liked for him to have had his power documented by science and now it sounds like Mr. Trivedi has done this.
Has anyone here received Mr. Trivedi’s blessings? What have they been like for you? If anyone gets a chance to meet this man please let us know. It sounds like this is well worth experiencing.
