The Presidential Roast
Tonight has been one of my absolute favorite nights this entire election season, as both candidates had an opportunity to publicly lampoon each other (and themselves) during the 63rd annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner, a charity event organized by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York for the benefit of needy children.
These videos are hysterical, and injected some much-needed levity into of the most onerous presidential elections in recent history. I feel like the valve has been twisted just enough to release an enormous amount of cultural pressure.
Both candidates demonstrated an impressive amount of humility, candor, and cool, and both were hilarious. I admire and appreciate both of their performances.
An estimated $4 million was raised from the event.

The Presidential Roast
Posted October 18th, 2008 by Brian EddyCory - thanks for posting this - I was not aware of this event. Did past candidates do the same? (If so, I've not heard of it north of 49). It's good to see Canada's # 1 Export to the US - HUMOUR - is used so well
- even by those in the highest office!
It's amazing what humour does for the Spirit of coming together in difficult times. I think that's what Schalk meant by 'being in good shape' - not denying these troubled time - but in the face of it.

sweet surprise
Posted October 19th, 2008 by Ambo SunoYes, I loved these. This was perhaps the first moment in a long while when I felt actually effusively appreciative of the culturo-political ways of our country. What a unique and wacky and particularly in this moment healing use of humor, irony, facetiousness, and frivolous exageration that is a serendipidous sweet spot in the midst of our media's tendencies towards over-indulgence. Great, relieving, releasing, surprising, marvelous. Ambo
