Politics and Art and Otherness...
If Integral (and others) tell us that knowledge, once unified under God, split with the enlightenment into three strands: The True the Good and the Beautiful.....
And if no one of these voices is complete alone.
And Integral is a voice of the True - aka conceptual knowledge seeking to organize understanding.
Then for Integral (I-I) to be complete - to be integral, indeed, Integral needs to include the voice of the Good - politics, and the voice of the Beautiful - art.
How to include these voices? Integral cannot claim to speak for these other voices, but only with them - a relationship of equals. A mutual meeting of otherness in an enfolding of taking and being taken. David Deida has a good metaphor for this but I'll keep it polite for now :)
One might say that Integral needs to submit itself to these voices. To those other great voices speaking with spirit's authority.
First, though, to acknowledge them, and their otherness, and then listen and observe carefully. Or, perhaps, the listening and observing needs to come first to even see that otherness. However it may be, spirit always asks attention.
What a fascinating relationship: one that first allows otherness in the world as an equal, and then allows that otherness to flow through it. A braiding together of different voices each tempering, transforming, informing the other. A dialectics, in short, of transcend and include across all three modes of spirit.
Where is the dialectic play in Integral knowing where we may see the voice of the true in dharmic dialog/play (and battle?) with the voices of the good and the beautiful? Is it here now? What might it look like? And what aspect/s of those voices of art and politics to listen to?
Does Integral see that art and politics, the equal in sophistication of spirit to Integral, are right here now. Not to be placed and lectured to, but to be listened to, and learnt from to produce a fuller, more integral, more becoming knowing. A greater isness.
Doesn't that feel wonderfully inclusive - a knowledge that performs more faithfully the great flow and fullness of the mutual interpenetration that is reality.......? It feels right to me.
So, again, what art, and what politics should we be listening to, making space for, learning from? What is it we should be looking for out there in the world beyond 'Integral'?
edit: of course, here I'm simply talking of the voices/modes of the good and beautiful. There is also, of course, all that fullness which is spirit at it's edge, yet not couched in explicitly spiritual terms - going on in the voice of the true. That too, should be acknowledged, sought out, and engaged with.
