Learning Cycles

Something for anybody interested to chew over.

Kolb came up wth a 'learning cycle'. To learn anything thoroughly we need to go through four stages--1) have an experience 2) reflect on that experience 3) draw conclusions on that experience 4) decide what to do with our conclusions.

Honey and Mumford said that most of us have a preferred part of that cycle - those that enjoy 1 they called activists, those that enjoy 2 they call reflectors, those that enjoy 3 they call theorists, and those that enjoy 4 they call pragmatists. Many of ushave a tendency to dwell in one part of the cycle (often to the detriment of the others.)

I take my British students over to France to visit their French counterparts and demonstarte that the British are pragmatists and the French are theorists.

Would anyody like to hazard an opinion on where various other nationalities might be centred? Or where this sort of theory turns up within AQAL?

Types

I have taken the Kolbe A index, is this the same company you are talking about? Sounds right down their alley.

I would place all such classifications of people into types on the aqual map. (it doesn't seem to be measuring a line)

deliniating holons

Hi Helen,
While previously unknown to me this grouping of four characteristics certainly has the look and feel of types; so it appears that Jerry and i are in basic agreement on this point. In taking off on this notion i have some words to say about your cross channel musings that types (by whatever name) maybe more or less prominent in one group or another.
In integral speak these cross channel and other groups are typically referred to as social holons; and when they refer to a people at large (which may or may not coincide with nationality) as a phenomenon they can also be viewed as what is sometimes called 'folk-soul'. Not to get too esoteric here but 'folk'  in the general sense of a 'people', and soul as a sort of intermediary or communication device between the part of an entity that must die and the part that cannot.
From my view the question of types tends to get less attention in the integral framework than does levels, lines, states and stages, etc. This may be prejudicial or maybe just a predisposition on my part because i'm now in my fourth decade of an active investigation that is based in large part on typing.
If i stretch my imagination deep into the past the whole idea of cycles or periodicity entered human consciousness by observation of the alternation of day and night and later through the alternation of the seasons.  Gradually this grew into the establishment of calendars and the study of the heavens that i have come to call The Ancient Craft; or in more conventional terms the often maligned astrology -which in more realistic terms can be viewed as a language.
Once a certain degree of mastery of this language is accomplished it's a simple enough matter to ramp up the interpretation of an individual to that of a holon; for the most part this is simply a matter of scale.
However there's an important caveat when it comes to investigating a holon. The Ancient Craft is severely hampered unless the originating moment of the holon is known. This handicap is so important that in integral terms it would be the rough equivalent of only being able to describe a holon in second and third person perspectives; while this may have some value, ignoring first person turns out to be a terrible handicap. In astrospeak, not having the true birth moment, is a rough equivalent of a denial of the first person perspective.
But all is not lost, provided that some semblance of the first person perspective is enabled. This shows up very clearly in the Ancient Craft when one of its thornier questions arises, namely prediction or rectification, the latter refers to the process of finding the true birth moment, when it is uncertain or unknown. It's a little known fact but one of the chief methods of rectification has to do with a first person I AMness phenomenon; simply put in mathematical terms this means that one equals one. One cycle of the earth revolving on its polar axis is symbolically equal to one cycle of its revolution around the sun; the recent successful prediction posted here of the Obama McCain election was based in part on this one equals one notion.  
So to address your question more directly, given a supply of skilled and integrally informed astrologers a thorough explication of the various facets that make up a holon could be made.
This is not to say that i am suggesting any course of action, only outlining what i have come to know as possible. My career as a chess player taught me well enough the value in respecting my own limits, as well as the capacities of those that surpass my own. . .
