A**holes in cars
Posted November 9th, 2011 by stefano"Clearing out a huge number of these folks can be a massive time suck, at least for the few days it will take to weed out the worst ones and get good at it. It might make sense to create a large committee whose job it is to gather information, build cases against offenders, and conduct these meetings."
From brief experience that's spot on. Massive time suck.
Perhaps it is better to remember that the lesser the crime, the lower the standard of evidence required. Murder? Full jury and a trial that can go on for years and years. But just trolling online? Some general impressions from the community or from a couple of moderators and then a very quick deletion or ban or something. It doesn't have to take long.
This is how ASBOs work in the UK, where you don't have to have fingerprints and DNA to establish that someone is a nuisance to the community, and you don't have to put anyone in jail either, you simply have the authorities make a broad survey of what's going on and tell the offender specifically what it is you want them to stop doing. Like, you are not allowed to stand outside school gates dropping banknotes in the street. If the person isn't willing to follow that then there is something not right anyway.
From what I perceive there are people on this forum who just won't follow any goddam rule no matter what it is.
I also think that an online communication list doesn't have to be called a "community". The world is full of companies posting adverts to billboards and TVs and newspapers, but that doesn't mean all those messages are a "community". If people simply want to post their views in the hope a bunch of people might read them, then that's OK too generally. If this is just a place to dump messages, that's OK. Twitter is a lot like that in a way.
But someone needs to choose and set the tone, what kind of place is this? That's a choice down to the forum owners. If this is to be a community, of sorts, then the shared values do become important.
Problem there, as far as I can see, is that we have a wide mixture of views and values and psychographs, which is not bad because Wilber touches on so many topics, so everyone can find something that resonates, but I think the discussions on these forums often enough fail to do what Wilber does, which isn't just to be open to say, the virtues of amber or the virtues of orange or the virtues of green, but to actually work them together in some integrated way.
All too often people just come at others with "you're wrong!" and I think you said this Jennifer, that simply blowing away someone as wrong is not integral. No matter how wrong their view may seem, it is true but partial. Otherwise it is just back to first tier wars.
So what's a "rule"? People may say they don't like rules or rules are too amber or whatever, but functionally, in the LR, they're just how stuff works. When I hit the "submit" button the software will publish this comment with my name attached. I can't change that. It is how it works. It is a rule, for want of a better word. What you write has your name and date attached. Simples. We're talking red lights at traffic intersections. That's just how the system works.
When we get into different values and types, obviously different people have different notions about what "works". I tried to think about this as mod. What I recall from the SD book is that they say what works for every level is basic courtesy and respect. You definitely want to respect red, unless the aim is to fight, and you definitely want to respect anyone at any other level too, just intrinsically. Doesn't mean agreeing with them, of even liking them. Just, each stage has a right to be who they are.
I think at the moment the forum is like a highway that's too congested and people are trying to get where they're going, but there isn't enough space and people are cutting other people up. There needs to be more space, and part of that is painting some dashed lines and creating lanes, and having some rules about when you do and don't cross into another lane that may be moving at a different speed or direction.
It is just about people not crashing into each other.
If people want to collaborate on a destination, even if they are coming from very different directions, then that collaboration might work. But if they want to cut other people up on the road, because they just think where that other person is going is "wrong!" then that's NOT going to work, we'll have a pile up.
I guess it comes down to some resonance and rapport, so like, my car and the car in front are travelling at similar speeds so by matching each other we can both travel safely. If the car behind me thinks I should be going faster and so to encourage me to do that, keeps bumping into the back of me "for my own good" then that's a violation.
And if people don't like all this, gee why should I have to pay attention to anyone else on the road, why do I have to pay attention to them, why can't I just be myself and drive how and where I want, then good luck surviving on the roads.
So that's an analogy I'd make (analogies merely serve to illustrate a point, not prove it).

For the love...
Posted November 10th, 2011 by Shikha Sabharwal I just now caught the reference, Jennifer. It's around city hall too, even on signs, they broke my heart a little at first, signs like 'Death to the Banksters' and 'Who's Side Are You On?' or something similar, various similar things. So I put up signs that said things like 'God loves Everyone!' And pictures of circles, since they have no sides. But perhaps we agree, that this is really just becoming too much of something? Well, see I'm a little afraid to even say that. Well, but- I mean, I wasn't around then, I couldn't possibly know. I guess maybe it's probably really hard living for that long (any long, but like through adulthood)- maybe without being really devoted to anything or anyone other. But, well- sheesh, it all makes me feel a little bit like I'm going to throw up and cry and cry and well- Sheesh. I mean, well, we all die in the end, I guess. So that's already certain. The meanwhile is maybe less clear. But also certain. I would love to spend the rest of my life around people who love me, even in tents, I guess. Well, this is no longer relevant. I guess I'll refrain from putting the picture up again. But I really do feel like it's relevant to pretty much everything, at least to me, so
Maybe you'll say, 'This is not helpful'. There's a chance I'll never talk to you again, if you say that. Love and deep deep blessy, Shikha.

OWS Boundaries
Posted November 10th, 2011 by Tara AdersI would imagine OWS has evolved their rules because they have two very real, time-and-space pressures that we don't have here:
1. They are face to face all day long, getting to know each other and taking care of themselves and each other in very basic ways--food, sleep, hygeine, bathroom etc.
2. They are action oriented and therefore must be capable of at least minimal effectiveness.
