What is most inspiring to me about being an Integral Coach is the opportunity to collaborate with and serve the growth of change agents, thought leaders, and “cultural creatives” intent on transforming themselves and society. Engaging in conversations that invite the play of Spirit and enable clients to find their voice. Seeing my client’s eyes light up upon a new self-discovery. Watching their heart open to a wider embrace of the beauty and mystery of life. Seeing their body become more capable of taking action in alignment with their deepest desires. Sharing “the simple feeling of being” with a client. Celebrating my clients as they achieve personal and professional outcomes that are meaningful and sustainable.
Some significant life experiences, education, or practices that have contributed to my ability as an Integral Coach include my master's degree in Integral Psychology; teaching courses on the Enneagram, phenomenology, post-metaphysics, politics, and coaching in the Department of Integral Theory at JFKU; participating in Integral Institute’s inaugural ILP group and co-authoring a guidebook to ILP group facilitation (forthcoming); and my experience as a scholar-athlete at Emory University, where I captained the basketball team for three years, earned a degree in business, and upon reflection, received a coach’s training in the spheres of disciplined practice, peak performance, teamwork, and leadership. On a personal and devastatingly transformative note, the suicide of my sister-in-law, mother to my younger brother’s then sixteen-month-old daughter, cracked open the walls around my heart and, more than any other single event, put me in touch with the preciousness of life and the suffering of all beings.
Integral Life Practices I am currently involved in are Ecstatic Dance (free-form, intentional movement). Diamond Approach (meditation practice and self-inquiry sessions with a teacher, in small group, and through weekend and week-long retreats). 3-Body Workout. Jogging and playing sports. Studying and discussing Integral Theory. Reflective dialogue. Being vulnerable in relationship. These are my core practices.
I live an Integral Life because integral living brings me great joy, and is a natural and elegant expression of my being. Because this is a potent moment in history, and the planetary issues facing humanity make it imperative for us to enact integral approaches and embody integral consciousness. Because I am compelled to bridge the gap between the state of our world and an integral vision of being-in-the-world.
People would be surprised to learn that I prefer pancakes for breakfast, peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches for lunch, and pizza for dinner—just not all in one day! I was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, but don’t have a southern accent... a phenomenon I attribute to growing up in a home with two New Yorkers as parents. I had my bar mitzvah ceremony not in a synagogue (ours was under construction), but at the local Jewish community center... in the basketball gym! I was “discovered” on Spring Break in Fort Lauderdale by a model scout, and after graduating from Emory I spent three months as an aspiring model in South Beach.
