An Update of Dances with Wolves?

It's nice to see that I wasn't the only one who instantly saw that this movie was an updated version of Dances with Wolves, which is not a bitch slap, I enjoyed both.  And then to take it one step further, a rehash of Pocahantas.

But the idea that there is an idyllic indigenous tribe somewhere with all wisdom, at least on earth, is a notion that should be thoroughly put to bed by this time.  Especially given the new historical discoveries of the once "exalted" place that the Mayans had among the new age crowd.  Wearing the skin of your vanquished enemies isn't my idea of a higher level of spirituality.

The main point is, we have to stop looking back for societal perfection and really really make an attempt to "include and transcend" .. for me that's the one real truth out there that can't be shot to bits by any bit of history we have ever uncovered.  We move forward, we only look back to gain wisdom and learn from our mistakes.

However, I still enjoy a good poke in the eye of the corporate machine mentality that was the fodder for Avatar.  Especially considering the events of the last couple years. The timing could not have been better. And now of course, the Gulf oil disaster ... if it was all scripted in Hollywood no one would believe it.
