THE NON-DUPES GO ASTRAY

There are two kinds of people in this world -- Suckers & Jerks.  And they’re both idiots.

Listen.  A “sucker” is superficially contented by his (or her) own gullible responses to common symbolism.  Whereas a “jerk” is somebody who recoils from the perceived gullibility of Others.  Suckers, for example, will take a simple delight in the prominent size & shape of a woman’s fake breasts.  They believe in the all-too-obvious story!  Jerks, however, are disgustingly eager to point out the phoniness of all false bosoms.  They believe the all-too-obvious alternative story!  In fact, their vanity will believe anything that places them on the inside track.

These two groups are very fluid.  On Monday, a sucker believes the government’s Official Story about the 9/11 attacks while jerks denounce this as media brainwashing.  Then on Tuesday the suckers have heard that 9/11 was an “inside job” and now the hard-nosed jerks scoff at this pitiful paranoia.  We are sometimes suckers for the juicy emotional immediacy of all superficial interpretations.  Other times we are self-congratulatory know-it-all jerks, allergic to trust, observing life through a cold perpetual squint.  It's like a sad, old comedy duo -- the willingly hypnotized fool & the fool who thinks he's not hypnotized.  And truly, our world IS a ship of fools -- but the very instinct that wants to define us in opposition to fools is itself a powerful root of universal foolishness.

The French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan once coined a beautiful phrase: les non-dupes errent.  The non-dupes go astray.  This feeling of a need to “avoid the common deception” is perhaps the very definition of gullibility.  Dismissal and disconnection is not a recipe for success.  Jerks are just another kind of sucker.  And if we desire to grow beyond all this confused nonsense then we may need to start by reversing our cleverness and affirming the emotions of suckers.  Without an empathic embrace of fools, all our “knowing better” (and even our “feeling better”) may end up both jerky & suckerish.

Now, jerks are correct to some extent.  Our world holds many tricks, many schemes, many levels of understanding.  But to grow wiser we must also become more deeply compassionate.  Not just compassion for our idea about the un-deluded existential core of suckers -- but compassion for their delusion as well.  The kingdom of heaven cannot wait for the end of idiocy and aggression.  It must love these things.  Let us be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.  Let us be as critical as Jerks and as open as Suckers.  Let us be no slave to the enthusiastic anticipations of this world, nor let us be a prisoner of the unfooled cocoon.

And if this sounds like I am telling you something that you don’t already know -- I apologize.

Chest dimensions

I kind of like them in all sizes, fake or real.

Polarity

I think the underlying polarity that you're pointing to is a powerful one. I like to frame the poles in their positive forms -- in this case, Astuteness/Shrewdness on one side, and Trusting/Guilelessness on the other. The more that we're attached to the Shrewdness pole, the more that we project away the Trusting pole as a shadow, and the more we see pathetic Suckers all around us. Conversely, the more exclusively that we identify as the Trusting pole, the more that we project away the Shrewdness pole, and the more we feel afflicted by Jerks all around us.

The more that we can keep both poles in our awareness, the more freedom we gain to act from anywhere in the continuum, to be as shrewd or as trusting as we want to be. Ultimately, this is how we transcend and include the entire polarity.

Math Check

two kinds of people in this world -- Suckers & Jerks.  And they’re both idiots.

Let's see. If I did my math right that would make us all idiots? Did I do my addition correct?

If so I am comfortable with the answer.
