The Matrix Trilogy Uses Integral Theory!

In order to understand what I'm talking about you'll need to go to another site strangely enough called BEYOND KEN WILBER. Then you'll have to look up for charts that describe various stages.

The first one you'll find is about Life Cycle Steps, which is purely about Developmental Stages.

The one under that, the Fundamental Developmental Sequence (wilber) chart is extremely important when you join this, the Biological Physical Stages and the Relationship Developmental Stage chart. Linked together, colour by colour, they eerily enough parallel with the stages of the Matrix Trilogy.

Here is the list in detail.

Stage 1, is known as Heritage, which is specifically about the Influence of Ancestors. This is the world we are introduced to before we meet Neo, the conflicting world of opposites, Rebel Woman versus Agent Man. This is a world of opposites, a world of conflict. It is into this world that Neo first awakens.

Stage 2, is known as Conception. Here Sperm meets  Egg symbolically, in this case the Male and Female elements meet for the first time and create a new being. It is here Trinity contacts Neo by waking him up from his slumber, which in my opinion represents a pre-consciousness state of existence. When he wakes up is the moment of the conception of his awakened consciousness and the beginning of his life journey.

Stage 3, Gestation, defines Neo caught within the Womb of Society. He is told by bosses and Agents about how the world is, and is oddly enough supported within this womb, thanks to Morpheus. It is during this stage that Neo undergoes the capapcity to feel undifferentiated stimulation of sense organs, or basically he receives signals from the world of the matrix which make him believe the world is real. He is undifferentiated from the Matrix, as everything that is piped into his head creates the matrix. His own individual existence and the matrix are one. It is during this time when meeting Morpheus, that he undergoes a stage where he receives input from the real environment, when he takes the Red Pill. He feels "cold" from the real world, and his senses shift to those in the real world as he becomes detached from the Matrix and thus differentiates himself from the world as an individual.

Stage 4, Birth is where Neo, attached umbilical-like to the Machine world, is violently detached from the machine world (the cortial implant cord is taken out, and his other cybernetic implants are disengaged). He is flushed naked and blinking, weak and helpless down the garbage chute, a reference to also the dual use of the vagina, that of delivering life, and that of delivering garbage (urine). He falls naked into the sewers from which he was plucked by the great hand of the ship Nebudchadnezzer and is introduced to the Real World.

Stage 5, Infancy, is where Neo bonds with his mother-like figure Trinity, and also father-like figure Morpheus. It is here he is able to finally respond to a real stimulus in the real world. His eyes hurt, as he has never used them before. It is also during this stage he is made aware of the real mother, the Oracle. He feels not only Sensation, but Perception as he is able to learn about his new environment through his biological sense organs. He is able to detect the external appearance of an object, in particular Smith in the Agent Training program.

Stage 6, Crawling/walking, Neo has the capacity to respond to the sense organs in the Matrix when he goes to see the Oracle, he is able to finally respond to the fact that all the events that happened in the Matrix, never happened in real life, that he himself is separate from that experience, or as Trinity puts it "The Matrix cannot tell you who you are."

Stage 7, Toddler. This stage is important as Neo finally senses his own self-centered urges, drives and desires, which is oddly enough that he believes he is not the One, as he tells the Oracle. It is when he goes back to the hotel that the Resistance emerged from, that he realizes he visualises something not present, the black cat, or the deja-vu. It is here he attempts his own self-initiative and self-support when fighting against the invading Agents. He gets semi-independence from the Oracle, although she tells him about the fate of Morpheus and how Neo will have to make a choice.

Stage 8, Onset of terrible twos, It is here Neo feels his own individual rage against the ideas of the Resistance to kill Morpheus after he is captured by the agents. It is here that Wilber states is the emergence of the individual identity. Neo becomes the One who opposes the Agents, who opposes the Rules, who opposes the "Herd Mentality" to run away. He is becoming the Ubermensch/Superman. And it is during this time period that he learnrs to use signs, characters, objects to represent something else. He believes "there is no spoon" and manages to dodge the bullets of the Agents for the first time.

Stage 9, Young Childhood. Neo obtains partial independence within the home environment (Matrix). He grasps or apprehends the internal hidden characteristics of the code behind the Matrix. He learns that there is an abstract world of meaning behind the stimulus of the Matrix, and learns to change His meanings of the code, and thus change his reality, and thus alter the reality of the Matrix for the first time. He resurrects from the dead, and halts the bullets in midair just by thinking about it. He has become The One.

Stage 10, Entering School. Neo now The One, goes into Zion for what is for us, the first time. It is here he is learning about the real situation of the world outside the Matrix. Zion is in danger from the armies of Sentinels digging from up above. And thus Neo has to learn about how he's going to fulfill the Prophecy. It is here Neo is seen as a god, and there are structures the people of Zion create to relate to Neo, offering him gifts and asking for his protection over their children.

Stage 11, Older Childhood. Neo learns about how the world of Zion is. How certain machines actually help Zion, such as the crafts, and the one that refreshens their water supply. He learns the lesson that "Machines don't only plug into us (humans), we humans also plug into them (machines)". Neo also goes through the Rule/role stage, learning that as the One he has certain responsibilties in how people think of him and how he responds to that matters, even though he is unsure of what to do.

Stage 12, Coming-of-age: During the celebration. Neo comes of age by making love to Trinity for what is for us the audience, the first time. It is also after this when Neo goes into the Matrix to see the Oracle again that he learns through his vision that she is actually a machine.

Stage 13, Adolescence. Neo undergoes a teachng of abstract but logical thinking, when he is taught about the Exiles, and also the need to go to The Source. It is also here he forms his own independent identity away from the role that has been placed upon himself. He says "I can't, I won't do that" to the Oracle, who says "you have to.." why? "because you're the One."

Stage 14, Nudged from the Nest. After his fight with Smith, Neo is now moved into the world outside of the Oracle's help. He is in the world of the Merovingian, and it is here reality shifts from being something logical and ordered, to something chaotic with the abilities of the ghost programs. He also learns that the world is different when he visits the Architect finally, and learns the true nature of the One.

Stage 15, Early Adulthood. Neo here learns that he has built a solid authentic lifelong relationship to Trinity. And it is here learning about his ability as "the anomaly" with the ability to alter the Matrix by carrying part of the "prime program". He is in essence a Systems Administrator. And it is this Systems awareness he takes into account when he heals Trinity. This is the Vision/Logic state of being.

Stage 16, Making The Grade. Neo has his peak experiences, where he learns of the emergent level of consciousness connection he has to the Matrix, being able to heal Trinity by manipulating the code physically.

Stage 17, Middle Adulthood. Here Neo becomes aware of the life-froce that wirelessly connects him to the Sentinels and other machines. This is the Psychic state after the Vision/Logic state. Neo's remaining close to Trinity and is growing, learning to use his wireless ability to stop a group of Sentinels from attacking them, thus resolving a conflict differently, by getting through to the insides of the machines.

Stage 18, Mid-Life Passage: Neo's world of things being based around purely what he wants, is broken through with the words of Rama-Kandra, and he now takes on the external needs of the world around him. It is here in Mobil, he has left  the material realm, and is currently trapped in the station, also known as Limbo.

Stage 19, Mature Adulthood. Neo understands the significance of what he has to do. He restores his relationship with Trinity, as they become reunited thanks to Trinity's efforts. Neo has met the creator the gross realm, the recycling center-process of the Matrix, Rama-Kandra, and he becomes through a sort of meditation, his wireless connection to the Source. This is the Subtle state of being.

Stage 20, Passing-the-Baton. Neo is told by the Oracle that "everything that has a beginning has an end" including himself. It is here he recognizes his own mortality, and that he now has to hand the fate of the world into not only Morpheus and Niobe, but also into Trinity's hands, as he prepares to go to Machine city.

Stage 21, Elderhood. Neo has to hand the control of flying the Logos to TRinity, after he is blinded by Smith, who has downloaded into the consciousness of Bane, who he kills soon. Neo is able to see the machine code, a glowing code of light, which is a formless mysticism. An awareness of the source of all consciousness, both Machine and Human, as the machines grow human beings, and thus he becomes one with the source of all manifest realms, The Matrix, Zion, and Machine City. This is the causal state of being. It is here as the blinded yet visionary man, that Neo takes the form of elder. He and Trinity support one another in compassion and trust.

Stage 22, Debility or Illness. Trinity dies after being impaled by machine-cords, almost umbilically-like re-linking her to the machine world, which takes her life, after having in the beginning given her life. Neo emerging from the crashed craft comes across the Deus Ex Machina, the God within the Machine, the creator of the Architect, Oracle and the Matrix. He talks about peace and finally reconnects with the actual consciousness of the DEM, as he jacks into the Matrix for a final time.

Stage 23, Senescene. Neo fights Smith despite his diminished capacities. In essense he is mourning and recovering from the loss of a loved one, Trinity. It is here that he also learns of his formless to the form nature of Smith, his Yin to the Yang of Smith, and in essence sees the opposites as needing to be one. And thus all three realm of the Matrix, Machine City and Zion being one in the form of peace. In essence this is the non-dual state of consciousness which Neo finally arrives at. He and Smith were meant to be one all along.

Stage 24, Death. Neo gives up himself, his essence, as he becomes consumed and converted by Smith, but due to Smith's no longer use (having destroyed The One) and being linked now to the Deus Ex Machina, Smith and all those taken over by him in the Matrix being turned back, and so the whole Matrix is reincarnated.

Stage 25, Legacy. We are left with the Deus Ex Machina, the consciousness beyond consciousness, and the new world affected by the single effort of Neo's sacrifice and efforts of uniting. A world of peace. And thus Neo leaves his mark upon the world, having changed it from war to peace. He has thus fulfilled the prophecy and become the One with everything.

Commentary

Matthew,

Not sure if you are aware of this or not, but Ken Wilber did a voice over commentary on the Matrix series. I have the DVD. It is excellent and highly recommended.
