Wikipedia of Spiritual/Psychological Techniques - An Example

The following is an example of a possible Integral Wikipedia entry regarding a psychological technique.  Of course, definitions and examples of Integral Concepts would also be part of this Wikipedia and would perhaps be more generally helpful than what I've entered below.  I would be interested in hearing what any readers think about this.

Technique Name: Holding awareness of one’s surrounding space

Use:  Stress control, improving the ability to connect with others when stressed.

Background and context: When I get irritated at work or get defensive, I have noticed that I pull into myself (emotionally, physically, energetically, etc) and the people around me start noticing it right away and reacting in a negative way.  When I try and fake it and be friendly and interact with people, they still sense something is not right.  And they are right.  I somehow introvert my energy and it shows up physically as not synching or resonating with the people around me, plus a lot of other subtle cues that they pick up on.

 General Technique Information: I have found I can counteract my "pulling in" effect by expanding my awareness out to my surrounding environment and holding it there (at least initially) as I interact with people.  The surrounding environment includes not only the people around me, but also the physical space, walls, furniture, etc.  In other words, if someone is irritating me, I don't just try and expand my awareness to include them, since if I just do that I find I inwardly resist.  By expanding my awareness to include the whole environment, it feels like it spreads out my irritation, dilutes it, and allows it to keep draining away so I can stay connected to the person.

Learning The Technique: I learned how to do this inner skill through a martial arts awareness exercise taught by Peter Ralston.  I sat in a room with my eyes closed and brought my awareness to my body and held it there until I was aware of my whole body.  This took a few minutes.  I then shifted my awareness to become aware of the room and the space around my body and held it there for a few minutes.  By shifting back and forth, I learned to do it with my eyes open and even while talking with someone.  The contrast between the two states is a definite felt experience that was surprising to me, as well as how I ended up using it at work.

Example of Benefits:  I have found it positively affects my relations with the people I work with, since when I'm preoccupied and/or irritated, if I make this awareness shift before I talk with my them and continue while I am talking with them, I am able to connect with them and they don't sense my irritation from my previous encounter and think I'm upset with them.  So, all in all, a helpful exercise and I hope it makes enough sense to others so that they may benefit from it also.

Warning: Of course, if in trying this technique, you note it has any untoward effect such as increased anxiety, dissociation, etc, stop using it immediately.  If the problems continue, please see a psychologist or other licensed health caregiver right away.  While this should be safe for the vast majority of people, some people store their stress in idiosyncratic ways that could potentially cause an unforeseen reaction, such as we occasionally see with a medication causing a temporary effect opposite to what is usually seen.

To whomever reads this, I am interested in your opinion as to whether or not you feel this is appropriate and/or helpful for the Integral Life community.

Hi Mike,

I really like this idea for a Wiki-type catalog of spiritual/psychological techniques. First of all I appreciate the clarity of your writing. (Incidentally, I did pick up Zen Body Being but it's still at the bottom of my pile.) Your entry helped me to see very explicitly how you use the technique. Personally, I can't wait to try it out for myself. I think the disclaimer is good too. Here are a few questions I have about how this Wiki idea would play out in practice:

Do you see this as actually accessible through Wikipedia or just a Wiki-like addition to Integral Life?

Who is the audience?

Who gets to contribute?

Would there/should there be an editor? (The disclaimer brings up for me issues of safety and liability.)

Would that be you? (Since your writing is so clear--a rare talent, I fear.)

How/who to judge the validity of an entry?

I'd love to see this kind of format used to explain various meditation practices (such as tonglen, vipassana, etc.). It would also be great to see, for instance, the various treatments for fulcrum pathologies Ken Wilber has outlined in Integral Psychology in this format with clickable references to explore. There are probably myriad techniques that lie outside of the western and eastern traditions as well. I can imagine how powerful and helpful this type of reference would be as it develops and matures.
