Future of Christianity

I grew up in a Christian home and became a minister in the church.  It was only when I worked outside the church that my understanding of Christianity changed.  Sally MacFague's books on metaphorical theology and ecology blew holes in the biblical god and Jesus Christ, the son of god.  Then the books by Ken Wilber turned Jesus into a mystic.  It was only when I read gnosticism, the Jesus Mysteries, Jesus and the Goddess, and the Pagan Christ that I realized that there was no Jesus and that god is only a word to name the unnameable and that the bible is collection of mythological stories.  The Jesus myth in the gnostic and biblical gospels, was "designed" to help people experience "gnosis", (knowledge) of the divine.  Jesus was never about atonement for sin, there is no Original sin, Jesus didn't die for our salvation, and we don't have to believe in Jesus as a historical figure to be saved and go to heaven when we die.  The Jesus myth is about realizing our two natures - immannent and transcendent - and to awake to this reality.

Although I appreciate the efforts of Christians to heal the exoteric aspects of the church and to make room for the esoteric side of Christianity, it is doomed to failure if we don't accept that the Jesus myth has a pagan origin and that Jesus is as "real" as Zeus, Hermes, Osiris, Odin or any other mythological figure.  On the transpersonal levels one cannot talk about the Trinity, Jesus Christ as Savior or any of the dogmatic mumbo jumbo.  Even on the literal (mythological) level it must be made clear that the bible and Jesus are only myths and that we can't read the bible as a historical book.

It is time to wake up to the truth about Jesus and the lie the church proclaimed to keep the "faithful" ignorant.
