HIVE = Holonic Integral Vector of Emergence
Plenty of scary singularity sci-fi-esque baggage gets slipped into the term, "Hive mind." An image that pops instantly to mind is that of the Borg in Startrek Next Generation, where all individuality becomes "assimilated" into a monochrome drone.
Telepathy is a nice idea, that is unless it turns into anything like the spam factory that much of the internet has become today. Would Coca-Cola pay hundreds of people to sit in blocks and think "drink coke!" for 8 hour shifts, jamming the air waves with enough noise to turn your average spiritual adept into a rambling mess on the street corner? How many times a day would you be walking down the street, with a voice screaming in the back of your brain, "Are you tired of not giving your girlfriend orgasms? Well now you can have a three hundred foot penis if you buy our pills!"
That sounds pretty deplorable.
So we would like a world full of people who are able to connect using minimal resources to share a deep quality of interaction
For those of you who've read Ken Wilber's "Integral Spirituality," when he is talking about the Lower Left quadrant he uses a metaphor of a poker game to represent the shifting altitude of a social holon.
If you are at yellow/teal/turquoise/ whatever color scheme you would like to use to represent being statsitically pretty damn neato, you may find yourself a giant crouching in a room full of altitude little people, so as not to fill their little tea cup with so much that its spilling onto the floor. I believe Wilber refers to that as the 5 % rule.
If there are 5 people in a room playing a poker game with you who are all at red, you may have to speak in red in order to participate in that "we."
I am banking on the assumption that everyone is up to date with the integral lingo here, but if I do pop out a term anyone is unfamiliar with, please I hope you will ask for clarification. Or also if I am misunderstanding some of these ideas (always possible) I would love constructive criticism so that I may fine tune my transmissions of information.
In "Emotional Intelligence" by Daniel Goleman, he devotes an entire chapter to the idea of emotional contagion. A story he shares is of a group of Buddhist monks walking through a field in Vietnam in which a crossfire between the Americans and the Vietcong is taking place. The peace eminating from the monks is so tangible that it washes over the crowd, pacifying soldiers on both sides not just during their crossing, but for the entire rest of the day and into the evening.
I love finding acronyms out of the word HIVE. Years ago, I conceived of a model called High Intensity Viral Education. The idea at the time was a brain software protocol to supercharge memetic selection within a community. That sounds kind of clunky and flatland to me now
After being deeply touched by the works of Wilber, I've rethought that and changed it to, Holonic Integral Vector of Emergence.
As an integral individual, or as an integral social holon, you serve as a vector. By vector, I am using it in the epidemiological sense.
You are a node from which the virus of integrating is spreading. Strategically applying your truth is leaving ripples whether you have yet come to notice it or not.
So the next time someone brings up the term HIVE mind, I hope you remember the pollen that you as an individual holon have to bring to the world.

cosmic groove
Posted August 25th, 2009 by Ev MilesCool post. How about Holonic Infused Volition Engine?
In the audio Q&A with Wilber on the book 'Integral Spirituality'. The chapter on the myth of the given. There is a great dialogue about the laying down of cosmic grooves whether you are conscious of doing it or not. Once you are at Turquoise you definitely become painfully aware about the cosmic grooves you are laying down.
I just layed down a stinker ripple on my blog about Integral's Google results!
