Dark Shadow

This is something that came to me after my meditation this morning. I put it out on Twitter, part by part, until I realized that it's a poem. I gave it a name:

DARK SHADOW

Even in tonglen

I cannot escape my Shadow.

Whenever the bliss hits,

The darkness comes next.

My Shadow cries

Like a little girl.

It screams for my attention

Like a hungry baby.

What are my choices?

Ignore? Fight? Follow?

I pick Her up.

I feed Her with my love.

I sing Her a lullaby...

Embracing my sleeping Dark Shadow,

I recognize why

My presence exudes danger

To those who choose to fight -

I AM DANGEROUSLY ALIVE!

The Shadow Needs Light

Hi Rita,

Thank you for the perspective on my blog, for introducing me to Marina Tsvetaeva, and for introducing me to your own poetry here.

This was great.

I learned Tonglen sitting with Lama Surya Das. He always had us start by loving ourselves, by focusing on the areas within ourselves that needed love and compassion, and then extending that out to those in our lives, then ultimately all sentient beings

I've found one of the most important things about engaging in a Tonglen practice is the light it can cast on your own shadow.  If you remain conscious to it, as you engage in sending compassion to those in your life, particularly those who may have offended you with their actions, you can become aware how your own shadow material may have played a part in your interaction or the meaning you took away from the experience.

My interpretation may be off base, but I think you captured this beautifully with your poem.

Thank you,

Carl
