Show 2 Practice: Observing Yourself

Take a few minutes to review questions 1 & 2 from last week. Make a list of qualities that best describe how you tend to interact with your family.

Examples: disengaged, overly helpful, directive, passive, aggressive, invisible, needing attention, etc.

From that list, pick a couple of qualities on which to focus.

Each day this week, begin to notice how these qualities show up elsewhere in your life. Really look for them. Focus particularly on interactions with others. This practice will be challenging, as you are trying to catch onto something about which you may be largely unaware.

At the end of the day, answer the following questions in your Coaching Journal:

  1. What was the quality, and in what context did it emerge? Describe the context.
  2. What was triggered in me when this quality emerged? In other words, what did I notice about my internal dialog, emotional state, and somatic response at the time this quality arose?
  3. What does this quality provide me? In other words, what are the advantages of behaving or acting in this way? Others?
  4. What possibilities close down for me when this quality comes up? For others?
