Genetically modified foods
Posted April 22nd, 2009 by Linda Hollier in response to [Comment Deleted]Hi Anne
It is my belief that corruption in society needs to be exposed and discussed at every possible opportunity at this point of time in history. (See my contribution: Reconstruction and Eagle Vision).
The corruption taking place at government level when genetically modified foods are permitted in order to promote profit, is in my mind particularly frightening because the effects cannot be seen immediately.
I include here an extract from an article which recently appeared in “The South African Journal of Natural Medicine”, a publication which is doing a praiseworthy job of bringing issues such as the one you mentioned to the attention of the public in terms which the layman can understand.
The article was written by the editor, Dr. Bernard Brom, and is entitled,
Should we be eating GM foods?
“At the present time the South African government is more supportive than many other countries, which have taken a clear stand against GM foods. GM crops are grown in South Africa and most maize products, for example, are GM. Even in the USA approximately 80% of all soy and 38% of corn are GM. Derivatives of these two crops are found in about 70% of processed foods. In addition, 70% of the cotton crop and more than 60% of the canola oil crop are also GM. Cows are injected with GM bovine growth hormone to increase milk production and you won't find any evidence on labels to let you know whether there may be a GM product in the food you are eating.
With so much contradictory science how do we decide whether GM foods are safe for our families? My experience has taught me that scientists are often biased and direct their research towards the results that they want to achieve. This is driven by financial support from industry.
But there are other more serious concerns than just poor science. The problem is that even good science may not be able to resolve this issue. We know that cancer for example is slow-growing and can take 10 or even 20 years to manifest. Trying to trace backwards to the origins is impossible because of the multiple factors involved. This is the crux of the problem with GM foods also, and why we keep advocating for proper labelling. All the research in the world probably cannot prove things one way or another for absolute certain until a great deal of time has passed - and even then the multiple factors involved are likely to confuse the issue.
So how do I decide? Experience has taught me that the best I can do under these circumstances is to choose that which is most natural and least tampered with by human beings. The evolutionary process is enormously complex and has not happened piecemeal - each seemingly separate part is connected. Thus each plant is not made up of parts but is a unique system totally supportive of the whole, functioning as one piece, and dependent on internal cohesion and relationship to the outer environment.
Any interference with this order will in the long run cause a ripple effect throughout that biological system and further out into the environment of which it is a part. Complexity and underlying coherence are everywhere. We need to honour that. I think we recognise from some place deep within us that genetic manipulation is touching the heart of something that may not be for the benefit of humanity. How much more so when driven by profit?”
Thanks to Schalk for introducing the topic “Big Money Leads to Compromised Integrity” and to you for your contribution.
