Esalen Institute

Founded in 1962, I believe that we need to give thanks to Esalen for helping to make a movement like ours possible. In the 1950’s there was traditional college and some narrow movements led by charismatic leaders. Esalen made it possible for people to learn a variety of subjects from a variety of teachers. I wonder to what extent the teachers were willing to learn from each other? We can learn much from the successes and limitations of Esalen.

·         Their goal was to help people to change; to achieve more of their potential. However, they found that people would attend a week-end or even month long course, get very excited, and then by the following Tuesday the excitement and change wore off; it just did not stick.  That is how the leaders learned that we need an ongoing lifelong practice supported by a helpful and caring community.

·         By focusing too much on their self people became self obsessed, narcissistic, arrogant, and isolated. This is why we need to be part of a supportive group working for a cause bigger then our selves.

·         In 1990 a graffiti artist spray painted "Jive shit for rich white folk" on the entrance to Esalen. Whatever we may find that is good, true, beautiful, and helpful we need to learn to make available to all persons in forms that they can appreciate and have affordable access to. It is all well and good to have expensive retreats in California for a select few but we also need to bring the good news to people in their communities’ through the world inexpensively or for free. One way to do this might be to work with existing structures like YMCA’s. We also need to address the interests and needs of all of humanity. Just some thoughts. Was anyone there at Esalen in the 1960”s?

A.C.

does things in NYC for not that much. Still a good amount of change, plus whatever to get there if you're not already - but , you know, better...

Maybe people think they won't be able to find a venue or establishment that will house them? That is false, at least here, but I don't know about other places too much. There are bunches and bunches around Philly, even in my neighborhood, or a few blocks from it, plus churches I know of that are willing to do such things, yoga studios, and places to stay, like the Hideaway Inn in West Philly, just a few blocks down...

That last part was a joke.

Good luck with that

Here's the archetypal example (in my experience) of the kind of resistance you face if what you're planning could possibly interfere with the local Dalek factory:

An Esalen Alternative

I am on vacation this week and could have invested thousands of dollars to fly out to Esalen to take part in a retreat and workshop. But this was not to be my fate. I did have a nice day of retreat on my own:

Spirit module; One hour of japa

Body module; Rode bike to an arboretum and walked through it. Breakfast and dinner – brown rice and dhal.

Mind module; reread and reflected on highlighted sections of the book, The Hippie Trip by Lewis Yablonsky, PhD.  1968. This book has helped me better understand the green level of development. I plan to share some notes at a later date.

Shadow module; None. Lewis found that their “enormous emphasis on internal psychological explorations” caused much harm to the hippies (296). For one thing it stood in the way of their being able to form real groups or communities. I guess this is why Ken has not pushed us to overdo this area and not to try to find phantom shadows behind every tree.

Aesthetic; Enjoyed nature bursting forth with new spring life.  Witnessed magnolia flower petals gently rain to a moist warm earth.

Selfless service; Repaired a bike to give away. Shared here. Offered food and water to homeless cat. Offered water to wild birds.

Social; Conversation with girl friend. Shared here.

Total investment; less than thousands of dollars.
