Meditation in Nature

Many ancient spiritual scriptures begin teaching us how to meditate by telling us the proper environment to meditate in; a quiet, solitary place in beautiful nature. It might be beside the ocean, a stream or waterfall; on a mountainside, or in a mango grove. I just don’t know where we ever got the idea that the best place to meditate is to be crowed indoors at expensive seminars.

In my opinion, in order to get very far, meditation is best integrated into a meditation enhancing spiritual lifestyle;

·        Living a quiet, simple, peaceful, stress free life in beautiful nature.

·        Getting plenty of sleep.

·        Exercising in the fresh air and sunshine.

·        Drinking clean water.

·        Eating light, pure, fresh, vegetarian food.

·        Having a few uplifting spiritual friends.

·        Having access to an authentic spiritual teacher.

Is anyone out there living such a life? Could you please tell us what it is like for you so we can be jealous of you?

If we find our self living a noisy, complex, unhealthy, stressful life full of strife and conflict, I think there is only so far we can go from here. Oh well. At least let us have mercy upon ourselves and spend what time we can in beautiful nature. Thanks for the reminder Susanne.

Cool & Thanks

I live in the Ocean State. Smallest state in the Union. We literarly have the cleanest water in the Country, even to the shegrin of the 'Water Action' People. My state is known for it's beaches, exotic restuarants, sea food shacks and clam joints and the Founder of Rhode Island believed in Religious tolerance and individual freedoms. Roger Williams, The man that bought Rhode Island, or rather Providence plantations from the Naraganssett Indians for a couple of bucks named the place Providence. Just the name is godly. Interestingly enough, when they were filming one of the Batmans movies, the movie makers came to Down Town Providence to check out the architecture,as it reminded them of Gotham city from the D.C. comics.

More than a decade ago in Providence, near the Ivy league school Brown University I met the most remarkable man I have ever known. I was already interested in the Buddha, and Jesus and wanted enlightenment like my life depended on it.I was outside a Store 24 smoking a cigareette and feeling rather vexed and excited(confused  too). A strange man appeared who looked to be in his late 60's and began pacing back and forth opposite me on the side walk out side the store. A message, more like a warning that he echoed is burned in my mind to this day. He said with great conviction and urgency!

"Beware of the image!"

"Beware of the Cloth!"

At the time I was going to one of those 'Born again Christian' Churches and caught up in their ruthless games. I wanted to belong but did not fit in any where. Later I realized this warning, like a message from a hebrew prophet-"Beware of the Cloth" was an indite-ment against the whole church and the ways we may be fooled by religion.

His other admission 'Beware of the image" crept into my heart immediately. I instantly knew the old adage "Reality is not what it appears to be and you have to go deep down to the ;salt of the earth to find her truths". Also I realized that life is a mere picture show an 'Image' in the mind, an idea, a slight of hand, a trick....And I felt in my intuition that this strange man had sunk beyond the "image". Where there was nothing to grasp of life,or personality(i.e. as in the greek, literaly mask0) And that this strange soul operated in a world space that was far beyond anything I had ever known.

As the weeks went by and the weeks turned into months I got to know this man personaly. His name was Elias the Least. He taught me a few yoga power techniques that you can do standing against a wall anywhere in the world (I learned them on a bustling night outside the same store 24). He told me he learned yoga from a Buddhist Master. He also commented that "once you get good at a meditation technique, you can create your own". Elias the least was a vagabond, shaman, scientist professor. A rare soul. one of the countless Unknown Buddhas that pass through this world as a burning flame and leave no traces.

He told me his philosophy of Enlightenment after he hipped me to a Brief history of Everything by Ken Wilber. Elias kept a brand new copy of a Brief history on his night table at the hippy co-op he was staying at and cooked delicious veggie food from heaven. He sang songs, He danced. He was completely Alive!

Elias the Least told me thus "Enlightenment"

"It means to be In Light"  "En-Lighten-ment" "that's what it means"

the L in enlighenment represents the symbol for an angle

And the angle is the "ight" factor...as in Might

                                                                  or Bright!

This is how he broke things down. I just understood maybe 3 percent of his philosophy. But he gave me that timeless tranmission that only a Buddha can give and it may be better left unsaid.
