Modern Islamic Scholars
Just putting this question out to the community, does anyone know where I can look for the best scholars in the Islamic tradition who are nonetheless modern orange altitude voices?
Thanks

My only recommendation (The Heart of The Koran) is in this thread, Integral Islam. I don't know of any Sunni reference.
That book is by Sheikh Nur (Lex Hixon), who I'd spent many an evening with, as had Imam Feisal, a physicist by training, who now leads the efforts of Cordoba House. The Cordoba Initiative should prove a good resource for the best current material on post-conventional Islam.

Hi
Posted August 16th, 2010 by Christophe WitzFor starters, I can recommend Annemarie Schimmel's 'Islam: an Introduction'
From there, you could go on with Reza Aslan's 'No God but God' or Bernard Lewis' 'Crisis of Islam'. Both are excellent scholars and worth the read.
But if you're looking for a genuine modern scholar in islamic studies, writing about philosophy, religion, and the social studies, then you might want to look into the work of Muhammed Abed al-Jabri and his excellent 'Critique of Arab Reason'. I just realized he has died in May 2010. Inshallah.
Greetings,
