chop wood, carry water

There is something in loving the mundane which feels very important now, and also worries me a great deal ... and it is related to my last blog post about Spiritual Bypassing.. although am not sure yet I can express exactly how.

I love the Zen saying

"Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.

After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water."

I think it contains a fundamental truth that is far too easy to miss completely.

There is something about the sparks, glitter and sheer beauty of the light as one approaches englightenment (or even just imagines it, perhaps) that is so enthralling it has the power to keep far too many of us mesmerised - so we never actually 'get to the other side' although we might imagine we have. The bright lights have us paralysed, mesmerised, like little bunnies watching, big-eyed as the car headlights approach through the darkness on the highway ...
This worries me.

I fear this is what is happening maybe, because I see far too many people effectively 'out of action' (not at all an enlightened stance) whilst the material world screams at us to please DO something.
& and all we need to do are all sorts of terribly mundane things ... but maybe that's precisely the rub: they are perhaps far too mundane, even "lowly" (we seem to be collectively saying) for our preferred status as Evolving Spiritual Beings.

So, whilst our economy accelerates towards an abyss, dragging entire species and unique human tribes into oblivion by their hundreds, daily ... we see a big increase in "spiritual activity" which however does not seem to include (or not to any significant degree, anyhow, amongst those of us who don't have to struggle for survival) getting our hands dirty on behalf of all Creation (like planting trees, restoring vital ecosystems, recreating local economies... )

Is this just a vital stage of preparation, before the Emergence?

I certainly hope so.    But am worried that there's maybe no Light of Salvation approaching & that we're just going to get run over.

Because it wouldn't be the first time.    The planet is littered with mysteriously 'abandoned civilizations' which seem very grand to many of us, and where the nobility and priest castes (those who did'nt have to get their hands dirty because they were providing virtual services for those that kept them in food, clothing and shelter) lived very sumptious lives, elaborating very complex myths and very probably also promised all sorts of amazing new worlds to come, to reassure their populations.. whilst the empire crumbled under the reality that they had simply over-shot their resource base.

The nobility & supporting priest-caste are always the last to really understand what is going on (because things can stay comfortable for them right until the end, simply because of their artificially accumulated resources and comfort), even as they could be the most empowered to actually do something about it, if they did understand it.

And we in the west, especially those who have the leisure and resources to be doing so much philosophy stuff ... are the nobility, on a global scale.   And we seem to be developing a powerful priest-caste (judging by the exponentially increasing number of spiritual and personal development gurus & experts out there..)

I loved (and hated) the Apocalypto movie .. and I think Mel Gibson was saying something important about all this.

Another worrying sign for me:

We seem to have gone 'virtual' in many ways: not only we increasingly use information technology in the west to control & move things about (but not actually produce anything vital), as we are encouraged to multiply the (globalising) service economy whilst the 2/3 World supplies our actual physical needs (as efforlessly & cheaply as possible for us, thanks to our brilliant virtual work)

... and (looking around , eg. to all the collective meditation iniciatives that seem be sprouting all over the place, increasingly) to maybe we have adopted a similar attitude in imagining that merely cultivating some mental attitude or 'vibration' will magically create the energies for the ecosystems to repair themselves...

Notice any patterns?

clarification please

"I fear this is what is happening maybe, because I see far too many people effectively 'out of action' (not at all an enlightened stance) whilst the material world screams at us to please DO something."

Are you saying that, for someone to grow spiritually in an authentic way, environmental protection/restoration is a requirement?  Because that's what it sounds like, and I would disagree.  Please put me in my place...

As far as the other things you mentioned - that many (most, probably) Americans have turned into lazy, self-absorbed, instant-gratification whores who tragically rely on technology and "stuff" to gain value and meaning in their lives - I completely agree (I know I'm guilty).

I think it would be far more important, and much more of a blessing for the planet, for an individual to focus on attaining his/her own self-realization/Enlightenment than it would be for that person to plant trees and save the rainforest.  There are already enough environmental activism groups out there, spreading the word and doing the best they can to influence as many people as possible.  More often than not, when a person reaches that Ultimate stage in their spiritual growth (but most likely before then), I would argue that the environment does quickly become a priority because said person would recognize that ALL life matters - but it is certainly not something that is mandated by the Divine to reach Enlightenment (see comments below).

The more important question to ask, I think, is if the environment is that important to you, then what are you, personally, doing about it?  How are you reducing your own carbon footprint?  How are you being active for for the environment in the world in your own unique way?  Its not something that should be forced on others, especially in a spiritual sense.  The most important thing is the kind of impact YOU are making, and whether that impact satisfies your own desires that want to make a difference.  What everyone else does shouldn't matter; the only person you can change is yourself.

Please Forgive Me

I really wanted to comment here today, but have not been feeling well. My financial stability took a big hit this last week and this pretty much anchors my Brain in the dirt. Everyone is seen as either a threat or a source of security. It's a royal pain in the ass. And while I've been under the influence of these drugs that my own Brain is creating and prescribing and administering, I've withheld comment for fear of saying something less evolved than I really want to say. The impulse is very strong.

So, here I am.

Stella, thank you for putting this out here. This is a lightening rod as you may have noticed.

Forget the Emperor. The Priest has no clothes. Their propped up lifestyle is COMPLETELY unsustainable! And while I totally support the Tradition of Puja and Bhakti Yoga because they work, this must be somehow managed in a new way that does not make the poor poorer and the rich richer.

[WARNING! APROPRIATE BIBLICAL REFERENCES AHEAD! APPROACH WITH CAUTION!]

When Jesus washed the feet of the Disciples He was turning the practice of Gurupuja (known in every Tradition by various names) upside down as an example of how to do this. It will still effectively create the State change, but the blessing flows downward instead of upward. It's more pleasurable to wash the feet of the person you admire the most than it is to wash the feet of a hooker or a pimp or a drug addict, but since this was His wish, it is like doing it to Him. After a while, it becomes even better - as Mother Teresa learned and showed.

Would a Kingdom of Glory have ushered in a Spiritual High Age led by the Elite Class of Jesus and His disciples? No. He squashed that fantasy. That's just not going to work anymore. In fact, it never did.

The link that I dropped in one of my posts the other day led to research saying how those who are enjoying high status are less likely to feel empathy for those of lower status. This is only empathy based on primitive visual-oriented Brain systems, but still: considering the state of most people's self-awareness (or lack of it) about what their Brain is telling them and how they rationalize it, this is the basis and foundation of most people who have succeeded enough financially to be able to afford to excercize compassion on others. For those who's survival needs are met, compassion is a luxury item that they've bought and paid for and they carry around in its own hand-sewn hemp bag along with their yoga mat and non-petroleum-product traveller java mug. There is nothing new about this class of Spiritual Elites. It's as old as the Priest or Levite who walked around the Samaritan so as to avoid helping him. It is going to take a whole new kind of awareness that will reverse this primitive trend.

I am too tired to say more now. I'll try again later.

according to KW

From Ken's A Brief History of Everything:

"...the point of a genuine environmental ethics is that we are supposed to transcend and include all holons in a genuine embrace.  Because human beings contain matter and life and mind, as components in their own makeup, then of course we must honor all of these holons, not only for their own intrinsic worth, which is the most important, but also because they are components in our own being, and destroying is literally suicidal for us.  It's not that harming the biosphere will eventually catch up with us and hurt us from the outside.  It's that the biosphere is literally internal to us, is a part of our very being, our compound individuality - harming the biosphere is internal suicide, not just some sort of external problem (Wilber, Ken. A Brief History of Everything. Boston, Shambhala Publications. 1996).

I guess the important thing is that we all recognize this and at least make an honest effort to contribute in an environmentally ethical way as a fundamental part of our existence, whether pursuing a spiritual path or not.

The Answer to Life, the Universe & Everything ..

One of the sub-threads above reminds me strongly of a key moment in that wonderful existential novel, The HitchHikers Guide to the Galaxy ... do you know it?

At some point at the end .. after many exciting adventures ... it gets to reveal the origin of our existence, and why we have this chronic problem with talk of this kind ..

(cut straight to minute 3 in the second video if you want the story quickly, start with the first one if you want some more more context & enjoy some vintage english humour  ..)

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Episode 4 part 3 of 4

What meme would you say the "middlemen" they refer to (and say we're tragically descended from) would belong to?

Or it is some kind of 'professional narcissism' we get stuck in, whatever level we're at, and then just go round and round and round in circles there?

Puzzled..

oh, and Kevin, YES!  Thanks for digging out that holonic quote from Ken .. absolutely.

Another thing that puzzles me no end is why oh why Integrals seem to equate any talk of preserving the environment as 'green' ... when we know about holons.

I guess maybe we just forget?

When I talk of "environment" I tend to assume we all understand that is not just "fauna & flora" but the whole big 'out there' which includes poverty, wars, ... the systems quadrant.

I also tend to assume we're all up to speed (have integrated?) with how these things  are all critically interwoven .... Is that asking too much?
