Beige to Yellow, Purple to Turquoise

Again I'm hearing Don Beck, in his discussion with Jeff Salzman, draw a parallel between the Spiral Dynamics first-tier-to-second-tier hierarchy, and Maslow's deficiency-needs-to-being-needs hierarchy.  It's as if SD is saying that once we begin to make meaning at second tier we are no longer much concerned with the basic, raw survival needs of first tier.  But I keep thinking about a point Barbi Hammond brought out in one of her posts a few weeks back, that first-tier-first-stage beige might have a lot in common with second-tier-first-stage yellow.  Given the undeniable and immanent reality of global climate change and the foreseeable but dreadful consequences thereof, then the primal survival issues faced by an individual person or clan at archaic beige are perhaps not so very unlike the survival issues faced by each of us and the entire human species today, amplified by orders of magnitude. After all, as SD so clearly illustrates, the over-the-top success of one stage produces the life conditions that necessitate rise of the next stage.

And if there is indeed a certain fractal-like similarity between the stages of first tier and the stages of second tier, might we not anticipate that second tier turquoise will bear some uncanny resemblance to first tier purple?  Can we see through the smokey haze of purple word-and-object-manipulation magic to some just-emerging turquoise manifestation of "arational-concretion-of-the-spiritual" magic, as Barbi puts it?  Climate change is no joke, folks.  We're gonna need some kind of magic, and quick.

Survival Behavior Motivation

I don't see  a lot in common with the possibility of the human race dying out over the next 100 years with the prospect of me dying of hypothermia tonight or starving to death this winter.

I go to a wealthy, Pluralist church (Unitarian), and there are lots of Prisus in the parking lot, but no one takes cold showers, walks to work, doesn't heat their home, carpools to church, etc..

It's a joke to some & yes

From my point of view global climate change is a joke.

Global climate change just is and always has been and always will be. I don't think doom and gloom scenarios based on computer modeling any # of years into the future serves any "real" useful purpose except to scare people into adopting the ideology that we prefer people adopt and fast. And that will not work. People will most likely regress under stress and out of fear.

It's those same tired ideologies (that need global climate change crisis to belong) that has blocked the progress in the self/social systems that could work with the current climate to further our belonging needs and allow us to transcend belonging needs altogether.

I do think there will be detectable harmonics between Beige and Teal, Purple and Turquoise, Red and Indigo, etc.. There already are harmonics (at smaller intervals) between Red and Orange and Teal, Blue and Green and Turquoise. It's the polarity swing back and forth between the Feminine and Masculine force field of nested Holons.

But the differences are quite obvious once you are at the altitude that is capable of looking back through the lower stages and register the "surface similarities" between lower and higher. The deep structures feel fundamentally different and can help to differentiate between the surface similarities. It's self evident once you are there.

Possibly so...
