Comment on Rabbi Gafni audio on Unique Self

 The Rabbi and the Ferryman

(regarding: integrallife.com/node/43910 )

Whack! Splash! Rabbi Gafni gets hit with an oar and falls from the boat into the smooth flowing river.

"What?" Choke, sputter... "Why’d you hit me?" Gafni squawks.

"You love your words more than your true self!"  replied the ferryman.

"What? Why would you hit me? You have no respect for eloquence!" Gafni replied as he splashed his way back toward the boat. "Help me up!"

Whack! Another strike from the flat end of the oar, right on top of his head.  Gafni's outrage and shout burbles in the tea colored water as he sinks down a bit. Brown silt swirls about him.

"You're awful!" He spits upon surfacing a moment later, a lump rising on his head. "How could you hit me again when I need help?" An outraged Gafni glares blearily at the ferryman, his once fine robes now soaked and muddy. “Get me out of here! Don’t you know who I am?”

“Yes. But I am the only one here who does.”  The ferryman smiled slightly, yet his unrelenting eyes held Gafni in the water.

“Your eloquence is like a selfish preening princess: entertaining herself and admiring her own brilliance. Keep up with that and I will drown you. I will only help... YOU!”  The last word thundered from the ferryman’s center and cut through Gafni’s noisy mind.

In the stillness after the ferryman’s shout, a stunned Gafni stopped his rough splashing and floated easily, the ferryman sat in the boat, splashes and ripples smoothed on the river’s surface, and birds sang along the shore.

Gafni glided to the boat’s side, the ferryman gave him a hand back in, and they finished the river crossing in companionable quiet. No words, no separation.

eloquence . . . whack!

Steve, you crack me up, here. A simple story with impact. Is this an old Asian ferryman parable, customized for the moment? Or did you devise this morality fable yourself. Still smiling, ambo
