UFO's: Lifting the Veil
I can see five very generalized categories of explanation:
What is perhaps most perplexing about human beings is what we include and exclude. By that I mean any given human being is born with the capacity to include and inhabit an astounding reach of inner and outer Reality. But we also demonstrate an incredible resistance to doing so. We're born with the Key to the greatest mysteries, but we can't seem to be bothered with turning it. And that disinclination can be exploited to unbelievable ends. Maybe our recent history is less a matter of being manipulated by malevolent forces and more a tendency to forfeit our own powerful nature. The invitation to evolve is most often refused. Evolution, or 'awakening' in spiritual parlance, is messy, painful, and god-damned inconvenient. But, ironically, what may be even more off-putting or intimidating about evolution is its annihilating Light. When we first encounter the prospect of inhabiting our nondual nature (Godhead, or Source, or the Absolute), we are apt to mistake it for a choice. Because we are temporarily afforded the sanctuary of a discrete, unique self, it's tempting to think we can opt-out of a Kosmic awakening, that we can avert incineration of this ephemeral assembly of qualities and preferences we call "I". The story of 'me' takes over, and pretty soon we are defending, maneuvering, and expending nearly all our energy toward the preservation and protection of an identity. What we include is 'I', what we exclude is 'it', or 'they', etc. This opposition of inner vs. outer, including vs. excluding, is one of the assumptions we inherit. Nonduality is the simple experience of Being that does not collapse itself into binary positions. Qualities and preferences rise and fall within it, but a nondual awareness does not identify with a preference, or quality. With even a glimpse from within our larger, Native Awareness, we may be shocked to discover the innumerable assumptions which operate invisibly 'as' our experience. These unseen filters don't just interpret reality, they can actually determine it. For instance, people at distinct levels of development don't just interpret reality differently, they experience different realities. Magic may seem like a novelty to you or me, but to someone with a genuinely magic World view, it IS reality. People live and die because of it (take for example the mass killings of Albinos in Tanzania which are committed in order supply Witches and Shamans with organs for use in religious rituals). from the cheap seats
Posted January 31st, 2011 by Kerry DuganThanks, Stuart, for that cogent summary. “Humans have managed to make speedy progress in terms of external capacities. Nuclear weapons, space travel, etc.—our internal capacity to oversee and manage those technologies has not kept pace. Our ability to intimately connect with the hearts and souls of EACH OTHER has languished behind, receding to a remote after-thought as our infatuation with ungoverned technology has grown.” In my response (“adaptive balance”) to Linda Hollier, on my IL blog (“theory and practice”) I registered my agreement with you here, saying, “Our interior re-tooling lags perilously behind our enthrallment with objective progress.” It’s a pleasant surprise that you’ve expressed well a few related assumptions I’ve held for decades, particularly re: “our greatest liabilities”. Also, for me it’s a really welcomed addition to the expression of Integral that the Sept.(vol.5, #3) issue of JITP has a piece by Robert Kezer on the URANTIA Book. The book served as a kind of kosmocentrism primer in my 16th year, setting the stage for an endurring view that ‘We’re-not-alone’, and whetting my appetite for the suspension of disbelief in favor of paying attention. I'm fairly sure we all have tales of mystery, inexplicable expierinces only vaugely integrated, liminal episodes intimating diversities of conscious entities... and an edge I feel all the time is how I 'loose half the audience' even though talking to myself. ;)

upward repression
Posted February 1st, 2011 by stefano
Oh UFOs! Wild subject. :)
Enrico Fermi figured, with back-of-the-envelope numbers, that its likely the galaxy is already colonised by space faring races. So he wondered, why don't we see them? (The latest estimate from astronomers is that there are 100 million Earth-like potential habitable planets in our galaxy.)
Maybe it's the Prime Directive, also known as the Zoo Hypothesis. We know from our history of human colonialism, that it is easy to destroy native cultures on first contact. Spiral Dynamics borrows the term "Prime Directive" from Star Trek for this reason. In effect, we're in quarantine.
So, the Fermi Paradox (aliens are common but why don't we see them?) actually leads to Spiral Dynamics (lower stages of develoment need to be protected by a Prime Directive).
UFOs aren't just technological marvels, they are cultural phenomena, as you say; they point to higher developmental stages. There is an interesting balance regarding technology, compassion, and the vast distances of interstellar space. Just look at humans: our level of technology is nowhere near advanced enough to travel to another star, but we have the technology to destroy ourselves with nukes. It is as if there exists a cosmic litmus test for a species' compassion. Or to put it another way, the cosmos is "self-weeding".
Most sci-fi doesn't delve too deeply into higher stages of being, but restricts itself to higher complexities of gadgetry. Funny how so many alien races are portrayed as evil? Or just faulty in some way. Like, even the advanced Vulcans are missing out on some noble human quality. This idea that humans will always be "on top" is perhaps the central conceit and a reflection of our lack of awareness of a wider perspective. It is our modern geocentrism.
In that respect I'm quite fond of Gurdjieff's Beelzebub's Tales to His Grandson. It depicts a hierarchy of higher beings, whose wisdom is by human standards, best described as "angelic". One of the lower of these higher beings, by nature, takes interest in the welfare of the human race, and notices that despite our tendency to make war, and perhaps various accidents and cataclysms in our development, we nonetheless have some potential for further growth.
Whilst that may sound rosy, it is always a case of "good news, bad news." In Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End, humanity's eventual evolutionary ascention to a higher plane, is intuitively anticipated by our own unconscious telepathic precognition many millenia in advance, and knowing that this ascention, our destiny, involves a death to the material realm, we instinctively resist it. This resistance manifests as our predisposition to immediately demonise the aliens who eventually arrive to assist us with the ascention. The aliens already know that they will be demonised, from experience with other worlds, which is why they don't reveal themselves direcly. The story illustrates our intuition of higher stages, and our upward repression of those same higher stages.
Faced with such shocks, when would be the right time for first contact? People here on Integral Life may welcome opportunities for transformation, ascention, opening, and expansion to wider and wider contexts. But, as the story in Childhood's End suggested, how would people at amber handle seeing a real video of the life of Jesus, recorded by the aliens 2000 years ago? What would green's unique sensitive self feel about our joyous development having been preprogrammed by a 2001 style monolith a million years ago?
I'm kinda wondering whether, since the film The Day the Earth Stood Still was made back in 1951, and there having been so many aliens in popular entertainment culture, so many movies and books, so many museums to area 51, and comic parodies, so much terror and sillyness, that if in a few years, the internet announced, "UFOs Land on White House Lawn", with clips on YouTube and thousands of eye-witnesses Tweeting, people might just say, "so what else is new?"
Could we become so blazee about change and trasformation, feel so at home in future shock, that we actually get to save ourselves?

Another aspect to the UFO thing is that their public arrival would objectify our identity as human terrestrials.
Currently we're embedded in our physical world and our worldview, and have nothing to contrast and compare against. In order to discern more about ourselves, and our condition, and sense of self, and awareness, our motivations, our patterns, our blind spots, we need something to compare against. This doesn't happen now because on Earth we're the "top species".
A dozen alien cultures turning up would reflect to us our limited-uniqueness and so allow us to transcend it.
There's a weird head on collision coming between:
- problems that transcend national boundaries, forcing a global perspective
- teal and turquoise altitude where we can better see the spiral of our own development, the patterns that connect all of humanity
- turquoise being the first altitude where a post-egoic self-sense can really start to stick
- planetary identity, "kosmocentric awareness", actually meeting cultures from other planets
I'm in no way looking forward to such a possibility becoming real. Sci-fi is fun, but if any of this happened in reality it would be turmoil.

"Aliens"
Posted February 2nd, 2011 by Gregory TompkinsThanks Stuart,
This is a real wake up call for me. I had kind of forgotten about the whole UFO thing (in spite of being a big x-fliles fan ;) I think you are right on in raising the issues of EVOLUTION, stages of consciousness, and context issues. Stefano's idea of repressing an impending jump to a higher stage of development also seems very plausible to me. Something is going on; my intuition tells me its more of an extra-dimensional occurrence, an experience of higher spiritual beings that is being interpreted from the prevailing materialistic world view as "aliens with advanced technology!". Ken Wilber somewhere wrote that we interpret spiritual experiences from our level of consciousness. For example a fundamental christian has a big opening and she can only describe it or make sense of it in the framework of her beliefs and conventional ego. For hundreds of years people have reported encounters with fairies, leprechauns, angels, gnomes, etc. Now people are calling these mysterious encounters contact with "aliens" and "ufos." Maybe because this is the only way they can make sense of their experience. I'm recalling Terrence McKenna's encounters (on "heroic doses" of psylocybin mushrooms) with "fractal elves" and bizarre "alien" beings. Of course it is very interesting that it all seems to be coming to a head now. Then again maybe there is an actual physical technological dimension to these phenomenon. It has just always seemed kind of silly to me, to gross, to obvious, for aliens to show up in flying saucers. It smacks of a lack of imagination. Real aliens that have made it through their own technological singularity (see Kurzweil et al.) would be way way way more weird and wild and evolved than little green men in flying saucers. I'm talking something like microscopic (even"immaterial"), pico-engineered, mass distributed, quantum entangled super-networked, multi-locating, superminds, possibly time traveling, teleporting instantly back and forth to their Matrioshka star clusters (stars that have been completely enveloped by Life, every drop of energy being used for Life for whatever wild cosmic thinking and creativity a community of minds on that order of unimaginable magnitude engages in.) I guess I'm just saying that there are far weirder things in this universe than we've dreamt of in our philosophies.

NASA's Kepler Spacecraft Discovers Extraordinary New Planetary System
Posted February 3rd, 2011 by stefanoScientists using NASA's Kepler, a space telescope, recently discovered six planets made of a mix of rock and gases orbiting a single sun-like star, known as Kepler-11, which is located approximately 2,000 light years from Earth.
"The Kepler-11 planetary system is amazing," said Jack Lissauer, a planetary scientist and a Kepler science team member at NASA's Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, Calif. "It’s amazingly compact, it’s amazingly flat, there’s an amazingly large number of big planets orbiting close to their star - we didn’t know such systems could even exist."
In other words, Kepler-11 has the fullest, most compact planetary system yet discovered beyond our own.

UFO Over Jerusalem
Posted February 3rd, 2011 by BalderHas anyone seen this video of a UFO that was apparently spotted over Jerusalem a few days ago? There are several different videos of the same event. Not sure if it is a hoax.
Stuart, I had seen this blog before, but I'm glad to see it resurrected. I thought it was very thoughtful and invited serious reflection on a truly puzzling phenomenon. I'm not convinced we're being visited by aliens -- I have no doubt alien life exists elsewhere in the kosmos, I'm just not sure if any of it has come here yet -- but I have had several "brushes" with the phenomenon that at least incline me to sit up and pay attention. Back when I worked as a court reporter in Virginia, for instance, my company was asked by Dr. Steven Greer to transcribe about 100 hours of audio that he had -- basically interviews of all sorts of high-ranking and credible witnesses of UFOs of one sort or another. I think this eventually became the "disclosure project." When his wife approached me about the project, I felt like we were in X-Files. She passed me a box of tapes in an empty parking lot and told me to be careful and tell no one what I was doing, hinting that something bad had happened to someone else who had worked on a project for them...
The interviews themselves were extraordinary and really fascinating. And I agree with what you write, Stuart, when you say that a transformation has taken place in the caliber of individuals coming forward to report on this phenomenon -- especially the phenomena that fall into that 5% truly unexplainable category. The men and women in the tapes I was privileged to hear were, in many cases, highly credible-seeming, intelligent individuals, often truly disturbed and perplexed by what they had witnessed or experienced. I found many of their testimonies compelling and convincing.
So, thanks for shining light on this topic (and re-igniting my interest in it, after a long period of inattention).

Over my head
Posted February 3rd, 2011 by Ambo SunoTruly. Restricted, apparently by my filters. I am broadly skeptical and relatively unstudied on the matter. I tend towards interior psychic possibilities that I suppose could be called and involve non-ordinary dimensions. I'm vague because I have almost no clue. I just want to weigh in on your sampling. Slightly glib, I want to see a space artifact under rigorous scientific scrutiny in a Smithsonian institute booth, right next to the many reported levitating yogis, and on the other side a sleeveless and slow and magnified demonstration of vibuti manifesting from hands and wrists - Rolex watches and Rolls Royces will bring special credibility and will rewire capaciously and subtly my filtering circuitry in a hurry. Thank you. Ambo

personal sighting
Posted February 4th, 2011 by Lynn RoysterMy guess is #4. I experienced a very clear sighting in Hillsdale, Michigan in l966 for more than two hours with a large number of other people including a man from the local Civil Defense office - up close for a good portion of that time. It was very large, very substantial and clearly beyond any technology we had then or have developed since. The official stance at the time was marsh gas (not possible given the terrain or the way it moved). The sighting has been described elsewhere, so I won't go into any more detail for now.
I'm delighted to see this being discussed in a reasonable way!

Required Reading Before this conversation gets too far
Posted February 4th, 2011 by Jacob CorvidaeWhile I fully agree with the general premise in integral circles that the reductionists that can be found in the scientific community create horrendous blind spots when they fail to consider subjective experience, that does not mean that all subjective eyewitness accounts are created equal -- even from credible sources.
When we use subjective accounts, we must also have excellent tools for understanding the depths and potential of our own misperceptions and misinterpretations of data. As it turns out, there is a lot to suggest that UFOs remain just what the word means: Un-identified. This is far from meaning ET. And in fact, there is lots of evidence to support the idea that one of the reasons for the growing number of alien sightings is because of the increased role that aliens fill in the mythic lives of modern people - including (especially?) those that may have eschewed other mythic forms and may otherwise seem more "modern thinking" and "credible". I'm not saying there aren't mysteries, but since it sounds like the overwhelming evidence presented here is still in the form of subjective accounts makes this very suspect still.
When we explore the mysterious, Occam's Razor is still an incredibly useful tool. Even as we break open old conceptions and open up to a wider interpretation of the universe, even as we move toward a unity consciousness (which I am far from), we must still practice discernment.
If this conversation were to continue seriously, it must include Carl Sagan's The Demon Haunted World as required reading.
I agree with the notion that one must remain agnostic about these things. Which is part of why it is so disturbing to see the relish and yearning that clearly drives a lot of people's enthusiasm for this topic. And frankly, I think the topic is distracting from the work before us. The work that actually matters. The work, play, life, evolution that actually matters.

FROM PERU INFO AFTER THINKING ABOUT CONTACTS
Posted February 5th, 2011 by Giorgio PiacenzaI think that for a poll like this let's also consider that there may exist different levels or various kinds of physicality other than the one we normally perceive and utilize. Besides this, due to some contact experiences quite objectively reported by some friends here in Perú and elsewhere in South America, I think that we must also consider the possibility of intra terrestrial dwellers (intelligent beings living inside the Earth's crust's natural and artificially adapted environments). The objective, exterior matter of both extraterrestrials and intraterrestrials may temporarily interact with the kind of physical matter we are normally aware of. Thus the phenomenon is elusive and, sociologically speaking, rather unimportant, insignificant and weird. As there may be physical realms other than the one we are accustomed to (and which we simply call 'physical' as though all else simply were either in the lump sum categories 'spiritual' or 'subtle'), we must remember that even the so called 'subtle' and the 'causal' realms of existence are supposed to have exterior, objective aspects. These objective, exterior aspects perhaps combine in different proportions to conform a particular physical realm. These other physical realms (probably made up of different combinations of more Metaphysically defined elements) may -under changing energetic conditions naturally and/or articifially produced- briefly intersect with our 'regular' physical world. Whether they be also simplistically thought of as "parallel universes" or as "other dimensions," I think that they are expressions of combinations of Three Essential realm-making principles (the Gross principle, the Mental and the Spiritual).
To say that the genuine UFO phenomenon is only 'extraterrestrial' is an oversimplification. Intelligences guiding a plausible ET spacecraft may normally live in one or more different kinds of physical universes than the one we are normally aware of. Then again, to say 'all of the above' may be true but, without a means to distinguish in finer analysis how the various aspects relate, also leaves us with an excessive degree of unproductive generality. I think that we need to start thinking about 'inter-realm' physics and processes while coming to terms with an Integrally expanded meaning of the word 'Metaphysics' in order to make progress in this UFO area of inquiry converging with the 'paranormal'. The truly "Integral" request here is for a more mature and inclusive Integral Theory that might be able to help serious, open-minded individuals consider the finer points of these matters more effectively.
As "Integral Theorists" I'de say that we need to be "inside a larger flock" (the word "Integral" means "inside a flock" as "Inte" comes from Latin "Intus" meaning "inside" and "Gral" comes from Latin GREX, meaning "flock"). To be inside a larger flock we need to reincorporate all the "lost sheep" or the supressed-forgotten elements or human discoveries of our previous cultural stages. Then, we might be able to start incorporating into the flock interactive intelligent beings from other physical realms (whether they 'come' from other physical realms associated with other planets or with other physical realms associated with planet Earth). Perhaps only then we will be able to withstand with less conflict-inducing fear this more conscious association in a more natural, less fascinating, easy-going way.
So, from Perú I bid you farewell for now, glad that the subject is at least being referred to a bit less dimissively in an Integral forum.

It begins with.........
Posted January 31st, 2011 by Mary Linda LandauerHello Stuart,
Reading this excites me; everything you articulate in this very passionate messge expands through my own being. But the deeper truth is we can only start with ourselves. Once we have opened the veil within our own hearts, allowing our very soul to meet its ultimate source, something extraordinary happens. A magnitude of divine grace....a Presence so vast and expansive it begins to expand my within territory, taking me into a beyond or absence of small self. I begin to vibrate to this greater field of divine resonnance.... and this opens that veil, you so beautifully describe. It also opens to the greater Kosmic forces, where life can be known other than a small planet called earth, and others that are not just mere human......this is the exciting part.....but words and theory and all that knowledge only confuses, until we dive into the thros of the unknown territory. Sadly, however, most of our brothers and sisters cringe at or refuse to even contemplate this within territory.....until something.....bigger and greater creates within them a tidal wave of pain and chaos throwing them into the arms of their greater Self.....maybe then.....or enough of us waking now, to expanded levels of awareness, hold enough higher vibration to either burn others away or take them to higher vertical reaches.....I can cry to the masses and some will hear. I can lay down my life for greater change and some will be affected. But the truth is each of us most do the necessary work of waking, meaning as you say, practice, shadow work and being with others of like mind supporting our growth. My heart breaks sometimes feeling, what can I do, how can I be of more service. But then I realize that what I'm doing is the greatest work; meditating daily, doing the work of clearing and cleansing my own body/mind and crying out from my soul to the beloved, please, through me help our world and humanitiy.
Thank you Stuart for writing this and giving me the opportunitiy to express my own beingness. The love witin my own heart continues to expand outwardly while it also feels the pain of others in the world.
And, I believe we are not alone....there are great entities within many dimensions vibrating at a much higher frequency....they are all around us, my own sensitivity can feel them, and often they impart to me beautiful messges that we are not alone.
Those of us who now are waking must remain ever loving, kind, and forgiving. Like you, my own level I haven't a clue, but I do know my heart is full and free to express the divine message of Love.
Blessings,
Mary Linda
