a poem by Ron Padgett
I'm delving into the arts and economics conversations around here, enjoying the juice in people's comments and opinions. As an artist, musician and writer, I've struggled off and on most of my life with how to make a living and still keep my basic sanity.
This week, I'm also taking advantage of the Big Mind retreat online, with many thanks to Bruce Lambson and everyone at the SLC zendo who are sharing two sessions each day online. Deep bows to technology. What luxury to participate right from my cozy zafu, here in my living room!
This came today, from poets.org, the newsletter of the Academy of American Poets. I just had to share it with you all - it perfectly describes my state of mind on this drab, chilly October afternoon. Especially while practicing Zen. Padgett is one of my favorite contemporary poets, a good teacher and writer. This is from his 1990 book Great Balls of Fire, put out by Coffee House press.

great poem! thanks for posting it - and thanks for the reminder about big mind online - hope all is well in asheville - it seems like a great creative community there - i hope to make it back next year - we should definitely meet and continue our conversation - i'm in poland right now at a film festival and the polish distribution company who picked up my movie (yay! first european sale! no more polish jokes for me) is having a time trying to find a translation for 'lymelife' since they don't have a word for lyme disease - and they'd like to incorporate a similar play on words (limelight ect.) but they don't know what - they asked me for any ideas - i said i'm out of words for this movie but if there is a magic Polish word that brings audiences to theaters use that... they said in that case we should call it vodka - since i'm a martini it's somehow apropos lol
btw if you ever make it to warsaw don't believe them when they tell you Polish vodka is special because it doesn't make you sick - it is a lie - my state feels permanently altered and my stomach has decreased it's size while increasing it's space - it must be reverse polish humor - but at least the audiences here are great!
thanks again for the poem - it makes me laugh - and hey, good luck with the sanity maintenance!
:)
