Apartheid, Battlestar Galactica, and Contemplation: The Journey of an Integral Artist

Our very own Stuart Davis talks to his Sex, God, Rock n Roll co-host Kandyse McClure about her childhood experiences of South African Apartheid, her time playing Anastasia "Dee" Dualla on the extraordinary science fiction drama Battleship Galactica, and how contemplation and meditation have helped her relate to her acting career as "a journey of self exploration and self discovery."

Hi Integral Life, Stuart Davis here. I just wanted to say a few words to preface this dialogue.

Most of the great relationships in my life have come from the integral community. Since the day I first met Ken, I have been gifted with wonderful people in my life—big souls who share a passion for more depth, more love, and more life. What can be said of these mysterious kinships? You know 'em when you meet 'em! And I knew when I met Kandyse.

We met, appropriately enough, at Boulder Integral. I was performing a concert, and we were introduced afterward by Clint Fuhs and there was—at least for my part—an immediate recognition. I wanted to work with her. I had never seen Battlestar Galactica, although I would later become to be a huge fan, but I just felt Kandyse was the real deal—deep, brilliant, and profoundly Present.

After working with her on multiple projects, and I can say without a doubt she's all that, and more. Whether it's a drama like Battlestar Galactica, a surreal comedy like Just Be Yourself, or as co-anchor of Sex, God, Rock 'n Roll, she is exceptional at every turn.

Happily, integrally-informed art is gaining traction in the mainstream. In music, film, and television, we are experiencing a burgeoning integral-spiritual subculture. But it's still rare, and it's often tenuous. When we're lucky enough to find each other, we have to help one another. Kandyse is helping. After years in Hollywood, I can tell you it is no small thing to find someone who will put their neck on the line to do something truly new, different... deeper. Many who are fascinated, enchanted with integral or spiritual, but they're don't put their necks on the line. It takes a big soul, a brave artist, and that's Kandyse.

That's why she's one of my heroes. Integral Life, meet Kandyse McClure!

Kandyse McClure

Best known for playing Anastasia Dualla on the Emmy Award-winning smash hit Battlestar Galactica, Kandyse continues to be drawn to roles that are physically challenging, and offer her the opportunity for creative and personal growth. "Acting for me is about the craft, and more than that," she explains. "It has always been a journey of self exploration and self discovery."
