"Love's Invitation" - Short Film, Top Ten Winner, Best Screenplay. Boulder Shootout 2009

The short film below, "Love's Invitation", was written by Ryan Oelke (that's me), directed by Ryan Oelke and Jason Digges, cinematography by Jason Lange, starring Stuart Davis and Hokai Sobol. Many of you in the Integral Community might already be familiar with all of these names:)

I encourage to watch the film first before reading the description and details of the film.

"Love's Invitation" was written to invoke a visceral experience of the dark night of the soul and the process of moving through that and opening up to the Divine, to Love itself, and doing that through life, through the suffering that we already have. Suffering can be the way beyond itself.

The film was in the Top Ten, screened at Boulder Theater, and won Best Screenplay for 2009. A few interesting notes about limitations that were imposed upon filmmakers:

  • Filmed in 24 hours flat.
  • NO EDITING. None. You could only do "in-camera" editing which means: shoot a scene. Keep it or rewind, shoot it again and move on to your next scene, sequentially.
  • Had to be 7 minutes or less including title and credits.
  • Had to include 5 out of 11 items that we did not find out until the start of the 24 hours. These had to be integrated into the screenplay I had already written.
  • We didn't do post-production on audio except for putting music in and recording a voice-over. Everything you see and hear is what we actually shot and recorded in sequential order.

fine

Ryan, I feel this as a fine visual poem, a hero's journey, and a tenderly subtle mystery story.

great job!

wow - I felt a lot of heart here - I love that there's no editing - and I really like seeing Stu so serious (although his inner goofball seems always ready to pop out) - I'm very curious as to what the 5 elements you had to add on the day - can you divulge them?

Beautiful

--Ryan,

Well Done!  That short is beautiful, and what an amazing job with all the limitations you were given.  I like the way that action, expression, music and poetry do a lot of the talking.

The Potential!

I absolutely loved the poem, it immediately made me wonder how beautiful a full length movie of yours would be.   It's a wonderful short.  Thank you for sharing.   --

Re: Love's Invitation

Beautiful work, Ryan.  Quite lovely and tender, without being saccharin or overly sentimental.  I hope you do more!  And I loved seeing Hokai and Stu in these dramatic roles.  Great job, guys!

thank you, I’m so honored that it touched you and you found it beautiful. I hoped that others would feel what I felt in writing it. The team was amazing in bringing it to life.
