As the Future of Christianity story unfolds on Integral Life, we are always pleased to welcome new representatives of the next generation of Christian leaders to the conversation. Which is why we would like to introduce you to Father David McCallum, a Jesuit priest and educator with a doctorate in Adult Learning and Leadership. I first met David when he joined a study group at Boulder Integral on Integral Christianity. His passionate and knowledgeable contributions to the group’s exploration really enlivened the discourse, so when he was in town with Father Richard Rohr last fall I jumped at the chance to explore his unique perspectives on the future of being Christian.

In this 35-minute conversation, David shares his views on what he thinks the differences between religion and spirituality are, and what each contributes to any healthy spiritual organization. Recognizing that certain elements of the traditional church are currently under fire for ethical breaches, David also comments on what can happen when religious organizations put too much emphasis on rights and rituals and not enough on fostering the spirit that that is moving through everyone involved. David also talks about the role that Christian sacred documents like the Bible can play in energizing our relational space with Jesus. Finally, David shares his views on where the important work is going on in exploring the Future of Christianity, and his personal preference for working within the evolving systems of the Christian faith. It is in this work that he recognizes that the Integral worldview of "transcend and include" can help Christianity becoming a truly transformative force in the 21st century.
