This week we will celebrate Dr. Don Edward Beck who popularized Spiral Dynamics. We will be joined by his colleagues and friends, Ben Levi, John Steiner, Margo King, Bert Parlee, Diane Williams, Deborah Moldow, Thomas Johns and more. Don Edward Beck (born 1937) was a teacher, geopolitical advisor, and theorist focusing on applications of large scale psychology, including social psychology, evolutionary psychology, organizational psychology and their effect on human sociocultural systems. He is the co-author of the Spiral Dynamics theory, an evolutionary human development model adapted from the work of his mentor and colleague, developmental psychologist Clare W. Graves, Professor Emeritus in Psychology at Union College in New York, with whom he worked for over a decade. Don Beck died on May 24, 2022.

Don Beck was a true pioneer in the area of developmental psychology, starting with his translation of Clare Graves’ groundbreaking work into Spiral Dynamics and then his continuing work in disseminating Integral Theory.  He was also enormously likeable as a human being, with a very big heart and a very sharp mind.  We got along great and I liked him immensely.  He recognized the importance of the Integral Approach almost immediately after encountering it, and he did much to help advance its recognition. I thoroughly enjoyed my time together with Don, and appreciated the joint work that we together presented.  We came to some minor disagreements as time went on, such as whether the Gravesian structures were themselves examples of the basic levels of consciousness or were merely an example of the values line of consciousness—I believe the latter– but other than minor things like that, we saw eye-to-eye throughout our entire relationship.  I miss him enormously, and wish him a peaceful transition. ~ Ken Wilber
