The Stage Integral Loves to Criticize (and Cannot Afford to Dismiss)
Integral circles have spent decades diagnosing Green’s pathologies: moral righteousness, ideological purity, endless process, DEI run amok, and the infamous Mean Green Meme. Fair enough. But have we become so skilled at spotting Green’s dysfunctions that we’ve forgotten its revolutionary gifts?
Green sees what earlier stages often cannot: the invisible contexts shaping human behavior; the power hidden inside culture; the social construction of identity; and the reciprocal ways we shape—and are shaped by—one another. These aren’t sentimental extras. They’re capacities we need to navigate today’s social and political complexity. And without their lived integration, claims to Teal can amount to little more than developmental cosplay.
Green has its own confusions, of course. (Spoiler: so does every stage, including Teal.) Because its newly visible realities seem so obvious, Green assumes everyone else should see them, too. If they don’t? More lectures, more workshops, more righteous indignation, perhaps another round of dismantling their “internalized oppression.” Green may not recognize that others are making meaning from genuinely different developmental perspectives. Inclusion becomes exclusion; compassion turns to contempt; equality hardens into coercion.
But Integral has its own problem when it treats Green as a swamp to bypass. Sometimes what looks like Teal is Orange wearing an impressive vocabulary.
We also confuse the content of Green—particular political commitments or cultural fashions—with its structure: the capacity to recognize how context, power, culture, and relationship shape reality. You can develop those capacities without becoming a bleeding-heart liberal. And you can champion Green politics without having developed them, ie, being more of the Expert (early Orange) in the Stages model.
Drawing on Terri O’Fallon’s STAGES framework and Integral theory, Keith Martin-Smith explores why healthy Green matters, where it goes wrong, and how to cultivate its gifts in ourselves and our communities: seeing power without demonizing people, practicing inclusion without abandoning discernment, and honoring differences without losing the capacity to act.
