From Languishing to Flourishing

I

was amazed at the serendipity when I opened the New York Times this morning and read Adam Grant’s article “There’s a Name for the Blah You’re Feeling: It’s Called Languishing.”

In it, he describes the feeling of languishing, something between not-quite hopeless depression, but far-from-thriving flourishing that he and millions of others have felt the past year during the pandemic. The reader comments to the article lit up with agreement and relief that readers weren’t alone in feeling joyless, listless, and aimless this past year.

In a word, millions of us are languishing.

The timing couldn’t have been better.

Watch as I talk with Lee about what an integral approach to flourishing looks like, and what we know about the science of getting out of languishing.

Lee Mason

About Lee Mason

Lee Mason was born in London and moved to Amsterdam at the age of nine. He is a graduate of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA), where he studied Physical Therapy. As a physical therapist, Lee has facilitated thousands of treatment sessions with patients in various sectors of the Dutch healthcare industry, including private practices, rehabilitation centers and a university hospital (VU University Medical Center Amsterdam). Over a period of three and a half years, he also worked in a hospice, helping terminally ill patients to cope, in a dignified manner, with the progressive loss of physical and mental abilities during the last stage of their lives.

Throughout his career, Lee gradually shifted his focus from healthcare to education and, in 2012, established himself as a freelance teacher. He co-founded Integral Higher Education (Integraal Hoger Onderwijs), an organization aimed at promoting the Integral approach in Dutch colleges and universities. He has facilitated courses and workshops for students of Amsterdam University College (AUC), Amsterdam University (VU), the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the University of Utrecht (UU), the Technical University in Eindhoven (TU) and Avans College in Breda (Avans Hogeschool). In addition, he has also provided individual coaching for clients employed by Accenture, Amsterdam University (VU) and the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture & Science (Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur & Wetenschap).

Outside of his work within educational institutions, Lee developed and hosted a course titled The School of Transformation, based on Integral Theory and designed to help participants (1) optimize their potential, (2) facilitate the development of others and (3) impact the world in a positive way. In his book, titled Optimal Health, Happiness and Meaning in Life (Optimaal Gezond, Gelukkig en Betekenisvol Leven), Lee presents a method designed to help readers successfully implement constructive behavioural change. Both the book and the online survey are informed by Integral Theory. Lee has a keen interest in holistic approaches to health and well-being and has studied systemic therapy (constellation work) in the lineage of Bert Hellinger. He is also a meditation teacher, who has worked in the Buddhist monastery of Yeunten Ling (Huy, Belgium) and has taught meditation techniques to individuals and groups, including employees of a Dutch health insurance company (VGZ).

Lee also regularly facilitates Integral Life Practice Sessions for Integral Life, including Befriending Chaos, Bringing Out the Best in Each Other and Unleash Your Talents.
