Karl Popper’s Paradox of Tolerance in Times of Hyperpolarized Discourse

August 1 at 9:00 am - 10:30 am PDT

This Integral Life Experience is only available to the supporting members

Navigating the Polarities of Tolerance and Intolerance is essential in fostering healthy discourse within communities, particularly amidst today’s hyper-polarized cultural and political landscape. Karl Popper’s Paradox of Tolerance reminds us that while tolerance is a fundamental virtue, it cannot extend to ideologies or behaviors that seek to undermine or oppress diversity and open dialogue. In this context, it becomes crucial to recognize that there can be unhealthy manifestations of inclusion and tolerance, as well as healthy forms of exclusion and intolerance when fostering debate and discourse. By fostering environments that prioritize respectful dialogue, critical thinking, and a commitment to inclusivity tempered by discernment, communities can navigate the tensions between Tolerance and Intolerance, fostering constructive debate and discourse while avoiding polarizing conflicts.  This session is inspired by the work of Barry Johnson.
