Healing the Divide: The Polarity of Freedom and Responsibility
“Freedom is in danger of degenerating into mere arbitrariness unless it is lived in terms of responsibleness. That is why I recommend that the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast be supplemented by a Statue of Responsibility on the West Coast.” – Victor Frankl
Do you tend to overvalue freedom or responsibility? What if I told you they were two sides of the same coin and to try to have one without the other is dangerous? We find ourselves with more difficulty than ever before in bridging the gap between worldviews, perspectives and beliefs. At the core of those difficulties are the degree to which polarities are in play. The more we are attached to a pole – only seeing the benefits – the more we are in fact unconsciously enacting the negative aspects of that pole.
